Hello, we are struggling to find suitable insurance for our full year trip in Europe but everyone we talk to seems to struggle with the concept..

We have vehicle insurance and recovery but we what the one thet covers you if you get robbed, fall ill etc.. we are in our 30's (just, haha)

We were recommended Atlas but they didn't have a clue

Thanks in advance

Try Equity or sainsburys thy may do a travel policy for a year, please be aware that some ( mostly all) travel insurance is for a 'return' trip, I.e, you have to put your outward and return trip dates in to purchase the policy....and a tip ....theft from a vehicle...if not covered on the vehicle insurance some travel policies will struggle to establish if the van is your 'vehicle' or your 'accommodation' ...used to be a nightmare when I worked in travel insurance claims dept. !

A p.s. if the driver falls ill make sure you know which policy will repatriate the vehicle...cos the travel policy will not

We checked this out and found nothing. They are all geared to the package holiday trade, flying out and staying in hotels, lost luggage, delayed flights etc. As you say they cannot grasp the concept of living in a Motorhome for a protracted time.

We rely on our EHIC card. Our insurance cover deals with robbery in the vehicle. You have to avoid private hospital treatment while abroad as EHIC will only refund the cost in a state hospital. You need to insist on being taken to a state hospital. There is an insurance EHIC Plus that adds on cover to the standard EHIC card. Standard EHIC only covers emergency treatment. If you need follow up treatment you are expected to return to the UK for that now. Having a motorhome you can get yourself back home.

The other problem we found was trip length as most only do 60 or 90 days rarely even 180 days which is the limit you can spend in any one country without meeting residence rules.

Pensioners with heath problems go over all of the time without travel insurance.

never had travel ins while useing van abroad (a) cos to expensive (b) probably not get it anyway . :goodluck: stan

Staysure have done a six month policy for me through their subsidiary InsureMe4. It cost me £87 for the "peace of mind". They've covered me for France, Spain, Portugal and Morrocco from 12 September to 14th March 2014.

I am planning four months in France over winter.

I intend to rely on EHIC and my ADAC Plus policy. The ADAC policy will repatriate my vehicle should it need it, and will repatriate me and my dogs in the event of a medical emergency.

I saw a report on a forum that ADAC had changed their recovery terms. They are not recovering non German clients to their originating country unless they are touring in Germany.

Worth checking with them.

I am starting a six month trip from end of sept, had a problem with travel ins, any will do 3 months I did eventually find one that would do six months + " Columbus" I think it was vindiboy who told me about them, £108 for me at age 66, younger could be cheaper

I emailed ADAC and asked if, as a UK resident, they would repatriate me to the UK.

This is the answer that I received, with a translation following:

++++

The performances of the ADAC Plus membership are are furnished to the domicile noted with us, to Great Britain. . A vehicle repatriation or repatriation is thus provided to your residence to Great Britain.

Plus the personal benefits such as repatriation You get the first 92 days of each trip within Europe, and the first 45 days of each trip outside Europe.

So it seems that all is well, although I haven't seen mention of a 92 day time limit for personal repatriation previously ...

Thanks for that Chris.

Comfort (AVIVA+RAC Commercial) do not have a trip limit in their breakdown/recovery/repatriation.

Hi

Like many others, when we overwinter in the EU we rely simply on the EHIC Card, which we have had to use on more than one occasion and which we have found to be totally satisfactory for our needs. However, if your trip takes you outside the EU (and countries such as Switzerland and Norway which have reciprocal arrangements) it is important to remember that the EHIC Card may not apply - so it all depends which countries you intend to visit.

Some others have mentioned vehicle recovery. Our motorhome insurance is with Safeguard, which covers us for 12 months in the EU (not all policies cover you for 12 months) and it includes vehicle recovery and the provision of a driver if you become incapacitated. But, once again, if you are going outside the EU you will need to get an extension to your policy.

Hope that helps.
