HI all,

me and the misses are off on our first trip next week and i need to sort a TV out sharpish. (I want her first outing to be a good one, so need all the luxuries in place)

Any suggestions where to get one? Best ive found is £109 on ebay. A second hand LED TV will be fine.
Iv noticed 240v LED tvs are ALOT cheaper, so maybe get one and an invertor...?

Will a small arial on the roof be enough to get a decent picture, or do i need a 'special' arial?

Thanks!

PS. any recommendations for places on the North Norfolk coast? Im thinking of wilding 50% and staying at Deepdale Site for the other 50%.

you could buy a 230v TV (cheaper) that uses an in line 12v transformer/adapter. I have two at home TV/DVD and take the smaller one in the van at weekends. You can buy adapters on the internet to work it off a 12v socket in the van. It works fine for me but I dont use it while charging the aux battery - just in case.

Removed, due to crossed wires ;-)

What do you guys think to these? There is a 10" version aswell.

Go to your local Tesco / Sainsbury's / Asda (other supermarkets are available!).

Take a look at the back of the 'home brand' TV's they are selling (on display) and there is a small plate with the information on it. You will see it say INPUT = ??

You will generally find that the smaller 17" / 19" / 22" say INPUT = 12v

The cable and plug sold with these units usually have a thick wire into a rectangle box and a slightly thinner wire out of the rectangle box which then plugs in to the TV. Again, if you can get access to this box there will be a plate on this saying :-
INPUT = 240v
Output = 12v

If it does, then all you do is buy that TV and then get a cable made with the same plug as the thinner cable that goes in to the back of the TV and a cigar 12v connector on the other. Maplin (other electrical retailers are available) will help with this.

Hay presto, a TV running from your 12v.

Must just add, before I get shot down in flames. USUALLY the 12v TV's sold as Caravan / camping / motorhome TV's are usually designed with travelling in mind and so can cope better with being knocked about. Thats why they are much more expensive.

Genius! I knew there must be some smart way of getting around this.

Really intresting, thanks. I will have a look tonight!

Don't forget you need a FreeView Ariel. You also need to know where the transmitter is in relation to where you are. A signal strength meter will help but you still need to know which way to start with. Hope the weekend goes well and you both have a great time. If you get a Tv with a DVD Player you have a backup plan. Take a couple of DVD's. You can also download films to USB Stick on ours and play that as well or stream pictures from LapTop.

The north Norfolk coast is quite difficult for wilding. I was there last weekend after the Cambridge Folk Festival and probably wouldn't have found anywhere were it not for the POIs from this site. I can recommend investing in a membership and downloading them into your satnav.

( And I got a brilliant nights sleep at a POI (nature reserve) by the A1/A14 junction on my way TO Cambridge - it justified my membership in one go.

We bought a Techwood tv/dvd combo 16" led, brilliant wee tv & only £80 .....oh & it was from Morrisons

Got one 9 mnths ago and ony used it once, more bother than its worth rather read a book.:cheers:

12v tv's

Maplins do a range of tv's that come with every thing you need, 12v + 240v leads dtv aerial, price depends on size. I have the 9 inch and its fine, nice and small enough to pack back into the box and stick in a cupboard when done watching, if you are only watching the odd show one of these will be fine and use less power than a bigger screened tv.

Squibby.

Tv from asda£100 19ins plus dvd look on the back if it's got a 3 or 4 pin plug that plugs in back of tv its 12v all you need to do is find a shop like modern radios in bolton take the plug in and thay will make you one up with a plug. That plugs into your fag lighter will cost between 5 to 10 pounds I hope this helps

Just thought id follow this up - might help someone.

I stumbled accross a 19.6v 15" TV at a boot fair, with a 12v freeview box. Only £15, so took a punt.
Pleased to say it works great - well so far at least.

So there you have it - 19.6v TV over 12v, seems to be ok.

Me too...two years later and it's still working well. Superb picture and sound for such a cheap TV.

I bought the proper 12v adapter on ebay, I think it was £12.50.

We have a cheap 15inch TV out of ASDA, £69 iirc and it is not 13 V but 13V, slightly better for the range the nominal 12v in a van will cover, works fin for us.
