12 volt TV in '95 Ford Duetto

We have a recently aquired '95 Ford Duetto AutoSleeper and we want to put a modern 12v TV in it. The problem is the 12v power socket in the van where the TV goes. It has 2 slots for parallel spade type connection. New 12v TVs look to either come with 2 round pin connectors or an adaptor which fits into a cigarette lighter socket. I don't believe the van has a lighter socket and if it did it would be in the dash which is a long way away and presumably wouldn't use the leisure battery in any case. I can't see any available adaptors. I spoke with an electrician from a motorhome accessories place and he didn't seem to quite understand the nature of the 12v power socket in the van and said he would just snip the end off the 12v TV cable and attach an appropriate connector. Anyone got any experience with old 12v spade type power sockets or have an idea for the simplest solution?
 
Many thanks maingate, I think you've cracked it. I just need to get a sparky to solder it up. They only have 2 left so I've ordered one.
 
I fitted this for my cello tv, on ebay and many types, just put spades on the old 12v wires and bobs your uncle.

You don't need a sparky because it doesn't need soldering.
The wires in the plug are fitted using a screw driver.

Just make sure you get the polarity right. If you don't know how to do that ask and I'll post details. It is straightforward to do but difficult to explain.

You will need a cable that has a socket for the TV on one end and a cigar plug on the other; a method of cutting & stripping wire; a screwdriver; a car with a cigar lighter and a mulitimeter (<£10 on ebay).

You may also need a cigar to celebrate doing it and saving whatever sparkies charge these days.
 
Hi r4dent, I don't know how to tell the polarity. I believe one terminal is positive/earth and the other negative but don't know how to tell. The Ebay listing for that plug says it needs soldering. I'm assuming a new 12v TV would come with a 12v cable where the non-TV end could be snipped off and replaced with the plug.
 
Personally I would replace the socket in the Van with something more common and useful (i.e. to suit what is currently fitted to the TV and countless other things you might buy) rather than changing the plug on the TV to suit a now-obsolete socket.
If you do it the way you are planning, you'll have to repeat the process each time you get or change something and want to use it in your van, and then if you change your van for something from this century, you'll have to change all the plugs again!

PS. the "lighter" socket aka "cigar" or "cigarette" socket is just another term for a 12V accessory socket of the type Trevskoda posted. It is not really a lighter socket, it just looks a bit like one.

That is what the multimeter is for. If the voltage on the meter is positive then red lead on the meter is connected to +ve on the source, if the voltage shows as -ve then the black lead on the meter is connected to +ve on source battery, Videos on youtube.

Off out in a moment, tomorrow I will post a dummies guide about the process in baby steps.
 
I appreciate what you're saying there wildebus. It does make sense to upgrade an obsolete socket rather than one appliance's plug. However it's gonna cost more and that old socket may only ever be used to power a TV. Moreover, the old socket includes a 3 pin 240v and a coax aerial connection as well which might complicate things.

Post up a photo of the set. might be simpler than you think :)
 
Will do but I won't see the van again until April 1st. Meanwhile I've twigged that these new sockets are quite variable. You can get power, USB and a meter showing the state of the leisure battery, which would be useful when you have no other means (which there isn't). The part is cheap enough so just the cost of a sparkie I guess.
 
If you ordered the parts then went to one of the meets on Motorhomer , there are members there who would love to rewire the socket for you
 
Blimey I'll bear that in mind. When's the next meet, and when you say Motorhomer does that mean joining up to another forum?

Here are a few numbers 15438499766 , 22437326392, 12v usb cigy sockets, these are very handy and you can charge the mobile plus some have a voltage meter, many to pick from and starting around 7 bucks, good luck.

I might be wrong. Did phil put up a post about taking full membership for wild camping motorhomer. Com and moterhomer builder. Free of charge before a certain date . I have looked and Cant find it. Even if I did I wouldn't know how to put it in this message 😂
