“Off Grid” grass pitch camping £38 a night!

Bloody hell!! Some of these prices some of you are paying would break by heart! I have a kind of mental block of paying anything more than £20 a night and I would expect hookup for that. It might get interesting this summer as it's looking highly likely we will still be in the south west over the summer holidays into August. Currently in north Devon. I bet I can do it for a tenner a night or less. 😎

Even worse Annie here’s the summary of our stay last year at the Travelodge.
£88, for accommodation, breakfast, and evening meal. Note the accommodation was £40.99 cheaper than a grass only pitch.

I’m guessing very few caravaners are off grid.

Tenters a high proportion are off grid.

But both normally have cars to get around.

Motorhomes and to a lesser extent camper vans are less mobile in this regard and need to be near centres of civilisation if not touring but stopping for several nights. Who wants to tour during August in the U.K. anyway?

The point I am making is that sites in convenient locations for motorhomes tend to be the pricier ones as they are near a beach, or shops, or popular rural pursuits.

There are off grid grass pitches high season in Devon and Cornwall available even now for around £15 a night however they do tend to be out the way so nearby public transport is essential. Without this it becomes impractical as try getting around and parking in these areas high season with a motorhome.

The one example I used at the start near Abersoch is convenient for motorhomes as it is near the village and there is public transport available. There are off grid sites in this area for £14 a night but they are all a bit isolated.

I’m suspect the sites mentioned above which are £50+ a night are in very convenient locations where the use of the motorhome to get around to visit local points of interest is not required.

We are off to France high season anyway to find as many free or low cost aires as we can. That’s the decision we have made.

If only the U.K. had similar arrangements for motorhomes then we would be spending more of our travel money in the U.K. but that’s life.

Just would not pay that amount .we stick to with rally ths cl .

Just had lovely weekend at Mansfield folk festival free camping and entertainment..

Its all down to what you want/need. When kids were little and I had the caravans we would go on sites with entertainment and all facilities and they used to cost a good bit more. Add to that a lot of times with kids you often end up n High Season price range. The caravan let us do things when we wanted, eat, sleep etc but it was usually similar prices to if you booked a holiday somewhere with accommodation but more convenient for us.

These days is usually just me and the dogs and I don't drink or eat out (or rarely) and am self sufficient for a couple of weeks easy year round. I don't care if I stop in a lay by when travelling but prefer somewhere I can have the dogs off lead when staying a few days or longer. Still quite a few places you can do this without paying anyone for the privilege, suits me but wouldn't suit others but that all good.

I did end up on a campsite for two days last month when Caz and one of the daughters was supposed to be joining me and managed to keep calm when I paid the £46 for me and two dogs. Lovely little site though and I did get washing down and empty/fill so offset costs a bit lol

My ideal would be an old byway with a couple of like minded friends playing the drums round a campfire though so as I said, what suits me won't suit others :)

CCC THSs in the SW are often on full facility sites. For instance Jun 30 - Jul 31 cornwall Da are at Watergate Bay touring park. Full fac. £19 per night inc EHU. Porth Beach £20pn incl ehu. The most expensive was at Padstow on a full fac site but no EHU for£25.
There are bargains to be had.

You might be right but we do see more Tuggers on the off grid CLs than we do motorhomes to be honest so some of them are certainly kitted out for it.

We actively seek out the remote out of the way off grid CLs. The further down a long goat track they are the better. Main reason being they are not popular, generally have tons of space, sometimes good views and the bonus is they are cheap. We then deploy the secret weapon! 😎

I wouldn't come down to Devon or Cornwall without it.

We will need to get a pitch in New Forest for use between the Strawberry Fields and Rye RFC Rallies. Forestry Commission have outsourced bookings, but, 'use your own facilities' sites can be had for s tad over £13 per night for 2 adults ['from £10pn' advert]. Checked on CAMH site within spitting distance last week, and from memory, it was £47.20pn for Members [grass pitch, no ehu], with a 'save £15pn on fees by joining the club' website banner, so £62+ pn potentially!

Annie last year we went to the NEC for the show.
I booked a Travelodge hotel near Birmingham airport for £75 inc breakfast.
You are paying £52 a night for a pitch.
And I was not comparing summer prices with winter.
All I was doing was to highlight that there are great deals in winter, and we enjoy going out in winter.
Annie I am paying £656 for 21 nights in 10 CCC sites in August.
We are heading as far south as Salisbury, and we are staying 50/50 with and without EHU.
Thats £31 a night, I reckon thats reasonable.
But if you reckon that £50 a night is reasonable, thats fair enough Annie.
Sorry Annie but I reckon it's a rip off.
And I know you are three adults to our two, but thats another issue.
As part of the August trip we are are going to Delamere forrest, were there are no facilities, but they still charge per person :(
Don’t get me wrong if it was just me and Bill I would never pay that much for a campsite but it’s a treat for my grandda and her boyfriend so on this occasion I don’t mind paying it.
