I am trying to get a manual to load from the internet, It is for mercedes and Smart, both of which I have. However it is encoded so needs an operating system called virtual box which is a guest operating system with in windows. I cannot load it as it went wrong first time and cannot be redone as it conflicts with itself. I also do not have the foggiest idea how it works or what you do with it.. Anybody know what to do with it?????????? I have asked on 'Fun' but no real help there only one answer. As I am old and stupid I think it is a step too far for me but there are no other way of getting data from Mercedes for anything, they just do not DO IT. pointing towards the dealers at £140 per hour.

Hi can you post a link to the site, l have a powerful computer at work and can try to down for you in the morning
Cheers
Andy

I tried to download from the e-manuals site and it fouled up, so that stops me from reloading it again as all traces must be removed to try again. I tried from the net and it stalls when actually trying to open it. It is a specialist thing that I do not understand but it is vital to get into the program. It also took an hour or so even at my 85 speed on virgin. All I want is information about Mercedes and my Smart diesel. No where else is any manual or information available.

Sounds to me like this might be a Virtualbox appliance (i.e. an Open Virtualisation Format (OVF) file). If so, you first need to install Oracle Virtualbox (Oracle VM VirtualBox) before installing the package that contains the manual. Virtualbox is a virtualisation environment in which you can run virtual computers. FWIW, I use this system to run several virtual servers and 'experimental' machines on two physical hosts and also have it on my Windows laptop to run 'scratch' machines to try out different Linux distros (I'm playing with Zorin currently). I suspect Trevor might also have similar experience. As others have suggested, if you give a link so that we can see what you're dealing with, we may be able to help further.

My mate is a Mercedes smart specialist his star machine has all the data and didrams on what info do you need.?

V box is used in linux to run a windows like xp 7 or 10 inside linux where it is safe from bugs.

It is the actual manuals I need view of , the Star is a programmer/ reader that is for the actual input of changes and reading the codes and protocols. The problem was I have downloaded all the Merc manuals but they are unobtainable because they are OVO??? or something.. The virtual box will read them but I ran out of time trying to download ir then I could not remove all traces so it will refuse to load because it says I am already loading, and let it finish the original loading, which is dead in the water/ logjammed and blocking all in sight. It probably wouldn't help me as I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. All I want is bit of information that are hidden by the makers except on very expensive terms hire per day basis.. The USA has the rights to know law but the EU does not support it as MB are a major supporter/backer of them.
The smart is a diesel 451 CDI 2011, and is in safe/limp mode with no apparent fault codes against it, There was a transmission sensor down but I replaced it and wiped the code, even got to checking and changing the ESP yaw sensor and now checking the steering angle sensor , I have been through everything that I can on it but the safe mode stays, EXCEPT when a left hand bend appears when it drops off and fire OK until the next upchange and back to 3028rpm. It really is doing my head in as I thought I could do somehow. It goes into safe mode when there is a danger of Engine trouble , blocked exhaust, stability fault causing handling trouble which is where the steering angle come into it. the first thing the ESP does is cuts the power to stops slides and spins but it doesn't get anywhere near one of those, it is a flat as a fart to drive. The fastest it will go is if I put an A frame and tow it faster than 55. It is going to be a really stupid fault but finding it among the hidden realms of electronic land is bad for my mental health.

My guess is "OVF"s. These are Virtualbox appliances. To load one of these, you first need to install Virtualbox and then (in Virtualbox Manager), from the File menu, choose Import Appliance, then browse to and select the required OVF file. Once the appliance has been imported, you can start it from the Virtualbox Manager. The appliance then should then run in its own window, from which you should be able to access the info you need.

Seems to me you need to remove VirtualBox from within Windows.

This webpage shows the technique:

Uninstalling Oracle VM VirtualBox to Resolve Connection Problems | IT Services

Start at step 2 I think.

Windows creates restore points at regular intervals. After doing the above I suggest reverting to a restore point prior to the VirtualBox installation.

Have a look here:

How to Use System Restore in Windows 7, 8, and 10

Once happy that your computer is back to its previous state try the VirtualBox installation once more.

Good luck!

I'm not that up ON Mercedes/Smart, but does it have Bosch ABS/ESC?

If you have changed an ESC component such as the yaw sensor, the system may need recalibrating before it will return to normal functionality and allow any present fault codes to be cleared. This would normally be done through the manufacturer's diagnostic equipment such as Star, but I have a copy of the Volvo technical software, which describes an alternative procedure that can be carried out where their diagnostic system is not available.

Obviously, I can't promise it will work on another make, but if the same ABS system is used, it would seem likely. Here it is:

Position the car on a flat surface with the wheels pointing straight ahead. With the ignition on, turn the steering wheel at least 15 degrees to the right or left, then turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. The vehicle must then be driven for at least 100 metres with at least one right turn and one left turn, each of at least 45 degrees, finally braking to a standstill from at least 50 km/h. Erase any outstanding DTCs (certain codes relating to pending calibration cannot be deleted until calibration has been successfully completed).

The car must then be driven a distance of at least 30km (18.64 miles) in accordance with two basic requirements. Lateral acceleration must not be too high (no sharp turns) and the road surface must be smooth (no potholes, grooves etc.) and not slippery.

Return to the workshop and read off any DTCs. Calibration has been successful if there are no longer any DTCs stored. If any DTCs are still present, attempt to clear them and repeat the test drive again.

Edit: Just to add, I assume when you say no codes are present, that you are using a Mercedes compliant all systems (or at least 4 system) code reader? A basic OBD2/EOBD code reader will not be able to access ABS/ESC system codes or any codes other than basic engine/powertrain related.

That is the way forwards but I am rather worried that I will clock up and destroy everything on my computer. I do not have a backup disc as I do not how to do it. I just use it and hope.

These procedures should be safe. However as HD says a complete backup of your computer would be prudent.

There are many software products available to backup a Windows PC. An external USB hard drive is the most commonly used backup device and some of these will be supplied with software to make a full system backup. I would recommend you investigate ...

Try AOMEI Backupper for your backup, the free version is good enoough for most people.

Installed (Following a recommendation from Del) and working fine for me .

Had to recover my newish machine which it did..

I keep all my photos on and external drive(s) anyway and "SynchToy" can be used to maintain the copy
A special different external drive for backups
All my live data Spreadsheets WP pdf downloads etc is backed up live with google drive.
The restore then gets refreshed with "up to the minute" data from google drive
Then just needing antivirus to update itself and maybe windows..

So in general weekly backups do the job..for me (Thanks to Mr Google)

So in all 3 external drives
Drive 1 for AOEMEI and if you are about to do major changes then do a special "latest backup"
Drive 2 Photos and videos
Drive 3 Copy of photos and videos and synched as described with synchtoy

Finally I use an SD card on my Laptop as a quick save for downloads of photos which then get put on Drives 2 and 3 above
I use allwaysynch for the above

The advantage of "Synching apps" is that they only deal with changes and so are much quicker than say a cumbersome delete and re-copy !

Its only another computer program just be careful where you download it from. I have been trying to get Android OS working on a PC and tried using Virtual Box. As its an EXE file you can uninstall it same way you do all other files using Uninstall. If you just delete the files then it will leave some of it behind which is why you cannot re-install it. Once you have installed it there are various setup procedures within the program. Its reasonably straight forward and there are loads of YouTube videos. I have given up with Android OS. Got it all working in the end apart from the USB ports which is what I needed.

I downloaded mine from here Virtual Box
