We have often found mashed potatoes to be a bit of a mare to do in the van, (steam, cooking time etc.) so my thoughts turned to instant mash.

I used to use smash when tent camping, but it's not great, so I looked at other brands. The other day, Julie picked up a packet of this stuff;

Idahoan Classic Mash 180G - Tesco Groceries

Prepared in 1 minute, and it really is surprisingly good. It comes in various flavours, although we have only tried the original. I have to say, if I hadn't already been aware, I wouldn't have known it was instant.

It will be a great item to keep in the van. Anybody else tried it?

Rob will have to try that as I find smash a bit powdery usually keep a spare packet in the van

That's also what I found with Smash Jeanette.

Julie just added a bit of butter to the Idahoan and it came out perfect.

I substitute mash for the foil packs of Rosti Swiss grated potatoes great for the van airtight foil bags long life on them fry up in 5/10 mins depending on how you like them great for the van.

i will have to try it, if nothing else it's great for thickening soups and stews

Where do you get them?

We get packet mash from Costco and it's really nice.

Sanisbury's own brand mash. The only one our family will eat. So usful in the MoHo.

One of our favourites is Corned Beef Hash, so easy.

Lidl stock them every October so I buy loads in bulk but you can order them online I googled them as they are hard to find.
Waitrose stock them

I've only ever tried one and wasn't really keen,but I'm willing to have another go,my question is,does it actually have any nutritional value? or is it just a gap filler.

I'm afraid I have no idea.

I would imagine though that it has the same nutritional value as ordinary spuds, but could be wrong.

asda used to do a bubble sqeak mash that was nice and the onion one was ok with burgers annie know my sheperds pie recipe

mash

The quickest and tasty mash spud I find a large tin of morrisons potatoes at 35p brought to the boil and drain leave for a minute or so to let moisture evaporate off and add a good knob of butter and mash as normal,plenty enough for one and tastes like the real thing.

Hi,
the best ready mashed I have found is in SuperU in France, very tasty.

For a really quick meal :- Packet of ready mash & tin of Princes Stewed Steak In Gravy.

Boil kettle
Put stewing steak in saucepan and heat up.
Put mash into bowl, add hot water and stir.
Put mash on plates, by which time stewing steak is ready.

Finishing touch - large glass of red from somewhere warm.

voila & bon appetit

Dezi :camper::cheers:
