Going via Tunnel

There was another thread about advantages of the tunnel recently . Most tunnel users were happy to pay more for the ease of use etc . I did a price comparison at the time and , in general , the tunnel was almost double the ferry . Curious about what price you are paying , using Tesco vouchers etc ?
We e been going over for 2 to 3 times a year using Tesco vouchers. Full price between £165 and 185 a trip meaning about £55 and £65 vouchers. Compares favourably with ferry and boarding/unloading so much easier. Rarely have to queue and book well in advance to secure good prices

Main problem Alcam, was, ferry was coming up at £90 - next week- tunnel £116 - both one way. Maybe classed as short notice or is it schools’ half term? When we came back in June only cost us £58 and we’d only booked the previous day. The last time I paid that was a couple of years ago when I wanted to come home quickly after breaking my wrist. Not used Tesco vouchers - use other cheaper supermarkets.
Although Tesco is not the cheapest, for us it’s the nearest and I have a tesco credit card which we use as much as possible, paying it of in full monthly to avoid interest payments.

The tunnel unlike the ferries class all motorhomes as campers & charge the same price unlike the ferries that have charges related to the length & height. I noticed that when I did a comparison with one of the ferry companies I had to choose 8 metres for the length (my van is 7.4 metres) then they also had a box to tick for a bike rack & for this I was charged more again. This despite my only being 8 metres including the bike rack.
We always try to book a couple of months in advance for the tunnel to get the best prices, the nearer to your departure or peak times the prices can be more expensive.

Unless the policy has changed in the last couple of years it makes no difference booking the crossing well in advance. I checked this online from say 6 weeks before crossing up to the day previous and the fares only varied depending on the time slot and day of the week i.e. peak or off-peak.

The more popular train times do book up quickly so this may mean you need to book early.

Late night/early morning crossings are much cheaper. However if you check in no more than two hours ahead of your train's departure they will put you on an earlier train if there's room without additional charge.

The tunnel sometimes does a sale first two weeks of Jan. But you need to know your dates or you pay the difference if you change them.

I priced up tunnel v. ferry in January but didn't get round to booking till August for a September crossing as I was saving up my Tesco points.

By the time I booked the fares had gone up almost as much as my points had accumulated, so I still ended up putting about the same to them to pay for the ferry.
