Just had a cracking couple of nights at Rutland Water with a couple of other members (Jim and Ros and Alan and Dawn).

Had a chat with Maddi, she is as well as can be expected, but it is still early days and it will obviously be hard for her over the coming months.

We got the usual warm welcome at the golf club, and although they were very busy with 2 large parties and a wedding, they still fitted us in for food, (which was great), and the bar staff are very friendly and efficient.

One word of warning though, at night we were plagued with Hornets, these were attracted by Jim's awning light. We went back to his van for a drink after leaving the golf club, but when he opened the door and switched on the lights inside, they all swarmed inside. Jim managed to entice them back out by putting a light outside, but as they flew out, they were flying straight into us, which comes a bit keen when they hit you in the face!

We all got into the van, but they still kept appearing for a while from behind cushions etc. and it became quite 'interesting' trying to evict them. I left that to Jim and Alan as I am terrified of the bloody things!

Next morning, Alan found the nest, which was behind Jim's van in a hollow tree, so we moved away about 30 yards or so, but we still got one in the van that night.

Anybody visiting in the near future, I would stay away from the corner where the old barn is (near to the Elsan disposal point). They are active all night and will be attracted by any light source.

What is it with you and flying insects?:D

Good to hear that Maddi seems to be ok for now, but as you say, still early days.

Glad to Maddie is coping well, power to her elbow!
Hope the hornets didnt spoil your few days away guys.

Hi Rob,

I am sure that all that have attended the many meets at Rutland will be wishing Maddi well and will post on here if there is anything we can do for her.

Also is the Wheatsheaf still closed.

Richard

I am sure the Wheatsheaf was open when we went to Arthurs funeral Richard

Hoping to go for a few days this week before appointments start

Nice to see Maddi is coping wish her well. thanks for letting us know Rob. oh glad the blighters didn't get you.

Did you get to fish ? some large pike in there

Channa

Unfortunately, they only allow fly fishing for Trout Andy.

They used to have a Pike match once a year though as a sort of cull, not sure if they still do.

The Wheatsheaf is up and running again Richard, although we tend to use the golf club more as it is only a short walk.

Trout have big rubber lips, it will be like looking in a mirror.

That is a bit sad, especially if you are a pike, early hours of this morning watching a programme with Matt Hayes and Mick Brown catching Zander at Ferry Meadows your neck of the woods. I have never fished for them myself, look like Pike on speed !!!

There are a lot of Zander in the marina where I keep my boat Andy.

I've never fished for them either, but I might have a go this winter. Barbel are my main target though, it's like hooking a torpedo!

A pal fishes River Don and a few barbel in there apparently, I have never caught one but reliably informed it is like having Mike Tyson on the end of the line !!!

I lure for Pike, too restless for dead/live baiting....jacks on light gear good sport, I have caught one or two larger fish largest 22 lbs ish, other than like drawing in a sack of potatos fish didn't fight that much , more of a not again moment ,un hook me take yer pic and put me back ...beautiful fish though.
Hardest river fish I have caught (still water really ) was a tench , that soon took off for cover and was a wrestle.

Getting a load of gear off my dad, but some of it carp ...might give it a go 100000's cant be wrong.

Still prefer the sea given a choice , live too far away to fish regularly

Yeah Tench fight well. I had a 100lb bag of them once from a lake in Derbyshire, best days fishing I've ever had.

I do a bit of Carp fishing, but, to me it's a bit like camping really, sitting in a Bivvy waiting for the alarms to go off. Biggest Barbel to date was 11 lb 12 oz, and that took off like a rocket, but many waters have them up to the high teens now, the record is 21lb 5oz and came from our local river (Great Ouse), so I must go again soon!

Just had a couple of days beach casting with Chris (Edina) last week, but we didn't do much good, just a couple of small Whiting. But I learned quite a bit from Chris about beach casting and sea rigs.

Weather turning cold whiting about, cod wont be far away.(hopefully) Sea Fishing seems to have improved last few years as stocks slowly recover. My local haunt was Spurn Point, dig yer lugs and riverside and beach to wet a lead,,,,i have seen deer on there as an aside , really makes you wonder where they hide during the day.

Mappleton this neck of the woods I have always found productive, Hornsea Mere good for pike

I have spent many an hour on the water at, in and around Ferry Meadows and I have never seen anyone catch a fish. The back waters are stuffed full of fish up to a foot long but never seen a live one bigger. A healthy stock of Zander could explain why.
