Get a lookout to stick their head out the Heki rooflight?

I came to this, by accident (by following signposts) a month ago:

Google Maps

I know the height of my Van, but I was frantically trying to convert 9'6" into meters....

Fortunately a helpful passer-by checked & gave me the thumbs-up as I drove through at 0.005 mph.

Answer for anyone interested - 9'6" is about 2m90 and the van is 2m70...

Put the length, width and height in metric and imperial onto a piece of paper and tuck it behind the visor, saves all the panic when negotiating obstacles.

Yeah, i've got a laminated piece of paper tucked up there, but only in Metric

Wrong.................I went through successfully without any mishaps.

Normally when faced with a situation like this I would have reversed(even with the heavy traffic in town) and took another route to avoid the arch,it's common sense that a 10' high motorhome wont go through a stone archway with a 9'3''height restriction.

Fortunately a local delivery van which was at least as high as me(probably higher)was directly in front and went under the arch.As I carefully watched it go through I feared the worst but was surprised to see it had at least 6'' of clearance at both corners.I followed the van and went through with some trepidation at a very slow walking pace.We both ducked our heads down when going through and feared the worst but got through unscathed.

The van driver obviously had local knowledge, had been under the arch before and the height warning sign must be wrong.

Disclaimer;-I take no responsibility for any damage caused to any motorhome that decides to go under the arch after reading this thread.

The indicated height is the maximum recommended height for vehicles passing through, not the actual clearance of the structure, there is always an element of lee-way as conditions may vary (road being resurfaced for one.)

This is an important point.

At local authorities there is often no comms between the roads team and the bridges teams. Roads teams will often add additional surfacing and not think twice about knock-on effects.

If you're thinking, 'pffft, it'll only be a couple of inches', I've had to deal with several over the last few years where the roads team decided to undertake vertical realignments of the carriageways to sort drainage issues and increased the surfacing depth on or under a bridge by a few feet without bothering to mention it to the bridges guys. One of these was to an underbridge, whilst it didn't give any clearance issues, it did drop the capacity from full strength to 3t (on an A road).

So treat any height warning signs with caution, the more faded the sign, the more cautious you should be

Great point. I reckon that is something 99.9% of people would not think about.

A 5 point turn

We went through Alnwick town centre today and came to this archway which has a 9'3''warning and the van is 10'high.:scared:

Any guesses on what I did ?

In the high street
Has to be done !
If you were to get stuck

1 more chaos
2 damaged van (very expensive)

I think the real question is, "Why did you duck"??????

Phill

Ps., well done for going for it & ten out of ten for observation!
