having just fitted a new thermostat in my fiat ducato/i have still got a problem as when my van is on tick over the cooolent start to bubble and spit out of the header tank could any 1 help me on this please. fatgaz

I can't be sure and don't quote me but this sounds very much like your head gasket might be blown and engine gasses are excaping into the coolant

Air lock
You could have an airlock in the system.
Rad cap leaking pressure.
A "sniffer" at a garage will detect combustion gasses in the coolant if the head gasket is blowing.

Sounds like air in the system to me try switching off when hot and squeezing the hoses to shift the air lock and when cooled down top up header tank.
If the problem was only after fitting thermostat that will be your problem

Head gasket sounds serious ****zer.....I hope not, and hope the technically competent have given sound advice.

If the head gasket is gone then it is a hell of a coincidence that it happened whilst changing the thermostat.
Trust me the second time i went to le-mans in my cobra roverv8 powered motor i came back a proffesional,and it was all down to the new header tank i had fitted where the return pipe to the header was just moulded over so the water couldnt complete the cycle.
I also took out the thermostat to stop any hindrence of flow.
Loved the rover v8 lovely engine just bloody expensive to mess about with
if i had the money i would have put four twin crbs on a wildcat setup.
Wildcat could get the engine to piss on chevvy engines all day!!

Ah perhaps you are right, lets hope so
Replacing a thermostat when an engine is boiling up used to be quite common when in fact you have a blown a head gasket, with either the the result can be the same bubbles in the header tank or radiator. Also removing the thermostat completly just before selling the vehicle was a trick. One place thet can give it away is to look at the inside of the oil filler cap, this might be full of white emulsified oil / water mixture if the gasket has blown.
It would help to know why the thermostat was replaced.
Those big V8 engines are great, I had one in an off-roader we had for a while, the fuel bills made me give it up in the end

One place thet can give it away is to look at the inside of the oil filler cap, this might be full of white emulsified oil / water mixture if the gasket has blown.
No doesnt always mean that,the cold will turn it that colour.Try the rocker cover first take that off and then you will know!

From experience Duckhams used to give the white colouration under the oil filler cap. In this instance I would go for the head gasket. Look for bubbles in the expansion tank, excessive white steam from the exhaust.

Some vehicles have a specific routine for filling the cooling system, an extreme example is that a few years ago some renaults needed to have the front end of the vehicle to be raised when refilling, my local garage used to do this in an extreme way by placing the front wheels on the lift and raising it to the required angle. My sons current car has a "hidden" bleed valve and it is impossible to get things right if it is not openned when filling.

Yes i had a bleed valve fitted into a piece of stainless tubing at the highest point on the system,ideally you need the header tank to be the highest point.

Little bit off topic I know but to bleed the brakes on the Hino trucks we had in Saudi, someone had to stand on the roof holding a tube and pouring brake fluid in to it.
I thought they were crazy at first, then they showed me the diagram (including the matchstick man on the roof) in the handbook.

hi all just like to say thanks for your help, went out today and checked the oil that seem fine blead all the cooling system, put a new seal on the header tank cap, and it seem to ok now, so once again thanks for your help, you may see me asking for help again as i just got this camper van and dont know a lot about it lol thanks
