Avtex TV and aerial problems

I have an Avtex TV and their own small amplified aerial, but do not seem to be able to get a good reception unless I am close to and pointing directly at the main mast for the area, which is not always obvious. I have been on to them and the bloke I spoke to did not really grasp what I was on about.
The Hymer aerial( wherever it is hidden up in the body) does not give a reliable picture either, the amplifier is turned on for TV power and yet it breaks up and spits and spurts all the time.
It is an aerial problem as the set is good when connected to the house aerial but the van is rubbish. I do have a dish but the setting up is long and drawn out process requiring a tripod and compass to get the right angle. I DO NOT have enough money for the VERY expensive self seeking Jodrell Bank type the some vans have. Does anybody have a tip as to how to get a decent signal without one of those, the multi-directional aerials do not seem to be a true and feasible way to go but there must be some way of getting a decent signal. At home I am only a mile and a half from the local repeater mast and still get the break up caused by a poor signal. Standing up inside the van can spomtimes bring the picture on as can touching the opening vent in the roof but only a few seconds then it is back. Being a metal body the aerials do not work at all inside the body living area.????????????????????????????:idea:

I fitted one of these two years ago. They are not expensive. The Hymer has a rotatable mast that emerges from the wardrobe roof and this sits atop it. Works perfectly even if only someway aligned with the transmitter!

Spend sometime looking at this website.

Log-Periodic Aerials

I will not be popular, but the design of a good aerial is a matter of maths.

As I have said before if you ignore this advice you might as well tie a shopping trolley on the roof of the van.

This website will also explain how to find your local transmitter and aerial that is required.

The advice on here ref. Antennas is good. I would check your cables and connectors before spending a lot on an antenna.

Dave

I have the Status 560 digital aerial which is excellent. It has an integrated booster amplifier and the mast comes down in the wardrobe. It's a doddle setting it up,just turn the mast until the led on the amplifier turns green,it will still work if it's orange. Not the cheapest but it works exceptionally well all over the UK.The one time I couldn't get a picture was when in the highlands of Scotland but that was not surprising as there was no phone or satellite signal either.
