Port Security

This question is a constant thought of mine, when we return to the UK. How well do you think motor homes are checked, entering ferry terminals. What are your experiences. It seems very lax to me. Or am I missing something.John

Security has tightened up a lot. Came through half an hour ago. 2 passport control. Then booking in followed by every camper opened and checked. They even properly checked faces against passport.

We`ve never ever been checked before but this last time was different.

We came back Calais to Dover at the beginning of the month see my post #34 in the " Calais again " thread.

We got checked at Caen and again at Portsmouth when we came back earlier in the year. They looked everywhere.

Brittany Ferries

Brittany Ferries

Not much security at Roscoff just a Man an Woman in uniform walked thru the departing vehicles more interested in each other than the vehicles. But Police at Plymouth searching randomly selected returning Vehicles

I thought as much, I think it could be better. In may when we came through Santander I handed the passports over and my partner was in the rear of the M/H. They never saw her. John.

Plymouth security

Oddly it seems more security questions when leaving Plymouth than when leaving Roscoff. Always love the question in Plymouth " have you any sharp knives?". Always tempted to say no because I need to blend all my food due to gum disease...... It's a camper van for goodness sakes! Returning from Roscoff it was cursory look and nod of the head, no questions, no checking the gas was switched off.Hopefully most stop and searches of any importance are intelligence led.

...... it's all down to the demeanour/attitude of the person who they ask for the documents.

A human can not hide their emotions if doing something seriously untoward.

Our van was entered and all big cupboards/spaces checked by border control staff a few weeks ago in Dunkirk.

We came through Dunkirk on the 20th June faces checked against passports, looked under all seats and in toilet plus had to open rear garage doors. took about 5 minutes. We were please they did it as in the past we just drove through to boarding

Came through Calais bound for Dover on the 22nd June 07.00, a French female officer said "we would like to look inside chief" I said, "but of course" :) She checked all the large cupboards, shower room etc. Glad to have these checks !!!

Incidentally we travelled around France for 4 weeks, at times seeing no other vehicles for half hour or so and certainly no traffic hold ups. We hit Dover and had an horrendous journey home from there to Guildford, including two extended delays on the motorways. Utter hell driving in the UK compared to France.

Will get unpaid weekend jobs assisting....Now they have cost us a small fortune !
AND it fits with their immigration antics

Just come back from Spain, Plymouth to Santander, "is your gas turned off?" Santander to Portsmouth, waved straight through! :yeahthat:

Last time through Bilbao every motorhome was checked inside and out by the Guarda Civil. Equally Portsmouth were checking vehicles in detail, thoughnot as bad as when I used the ferry there in the 80s when it was faster to go through the red channel
