Cheap Garmin 760 Camper satnav

The Garmin does however show the POI's as you are driving the route so you can see them when you are in the vacinity, (and anyway it is a simple process to search for any POI on your route before you set off) and by that way it does not clutter up the screen with POI's, mostly one's that aren't realevant to you anyway. It will also find them if you are browsing the map, but for some reason not all the time. I've loads of POI's on my Garmin as well, but so far as French aires are concerned (which is our main concern) niether TT or Garmin give you any indication of what type of aire it is. So we always use the the Garmin (or the TomTom when we had it (4 of them, all were not brilliant) in conjuction with 'All the Aires' book. So once we have confirmed an aire to be Ok in the book it is a simple process to find it on the satnav (Garmin or TomTom). The main difference I have found between the Garmin and the TT is the uprate speed and the Garmin is miles quicker than the TomTom. The TomTom's that I have owned in the past have always seemed very 'clunky' in operation compared to the Garmin. Maybe the newer TT's (this years)are better.

A number of members have had problems with the Garmin Camper satnav.

Why don't you (or Steve121) start a 'How to' thread for the benefit of other members. That is what this forum is all about, helping other members.

In the past I've used a couple of systems, including a Chinese one with igo 8, but the only 'grown up ones have been Garmins, and not having really anything to compare them with, I have found them exceedingly useful. I'm sure all systems have their own particular niggles, and dedicated followers will be determined to pick holes in systems other than their own favourite. So for me, not knowing any differently, my Aldi £199 Garmin is the dogs danglies :dog: and David, I'm not the least bit technical, in fact I'm the prototype numpty.

btw, our local Aldi still have a couple left and a couple of the motorcycle ones too

A number have also had problems getting the POI's on to the new TomTom's as well as I recollect.

Quite right ......... and other members help them.

It would seem that some members are very quick to inform the rest of us that they have no problems, yet will not offer any helpful advice to those in trouble. If everyone was like that, this forum would be utter crap.

You are clearly misinformed. If any members wish to contact me with Garmin realated questions I will be happy to answer to the best of my ability. To date nobody has.
All GPS units have problems of one sort or another, and we all have a preference as to which unit we prefer to use. Mine, and quite a few others on here seem to have a preference for Garmin.
If you have a preference for TomTom then that is your choice. You may be lucky to find one of my TomToms at the side of the A10 in the middle of France, which is where I chucked it when it crashed yet again. It's fully loaded with 'Truck' software as well.

Ok I will ask the a question. I use Tom Tom on my iPad. I have all the poi's downloaded maybe 70-80 k of them. When I want to use one I just browse map click on the POI and tomtom takes me to it. An aside from this is I have maps.me and poi viewer . Which again I click on a POI and it comes ask and asks me if I want apple maps or Tom Tom to take me there. I know the Garmin won't do that but is there a way I can view map on Garmin like from weymouth and check out Aires in France or WC spots in Wales. I know it will bring a list up and tell me how many miles away and general direction of travel to get there. But I want to be able to view the place I intend to go to and try and find a POI before I get there. Sorry if that is a muddled up question but it is wine time lol

edit...it is the paid for Euro map Tom Tom not the new free Tom Tom Go

Type in the name of your destination in the top RH box on the Garmin 'Searching Near', go to 'Categories' and choose your POI from there. If its a 3rd party POI like WC then it will be in 'Custom POIs'. It will give you a list starting with the nearest to your destiation, and the distance from it. Click on the POI you want and then click 'i' for info on that POI or 'Routes' to see the different routes on offer. Then click 'Go'. Simple.

It's a shame about your Tom Tom in France, if you had contacted me, I might have been able to help.

I did try reseting it (about 6 times) if that's what you're thinking, but it still kept crashing. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for that.... And I'm sorry if I sound dumb but say I tell Garmin to take me from weymouth to Barcelona ...then if I look on the route will the poi's show up. I have even exported them all into favourites thinking they would show but if they do I can't find them lol.

ps that's the trouble though when you say it shows a list and it is just in a general direction.....ie 14 mile north west might mean 10 out of my way...but the one after says 20 miles north west but might actually be only 1 mile from my route. Hope this makes sense.
It would be so much easier if you could enlarge the map and then they all came into view as Tom Tom does. I have no doubt it is a pretty good machine. But I might have been spoilt.

Precisely. But I would add that if you ask for POI's when on the move it does show you all the realevant POI's, once again the nearest first, but now with a direction arrow as well.

I agree about having a printed map as a back up and also route planning on a navigation device such as a satnav or smartphone using an app.The screens are just not big enough to show all the information.

However when a netbook with 10''screen is used it changes things significantly.Using microsoft Autoroutes 2013 on a samsung netbook with a 10''screen it's possible to plan a route in advance and display the poi of your choice, zoom in,show information and it's all nice and clear. The map below is one I did recently for a route from Portugal to the Santander ferry, there are numerous poi datasets and it's very convenient to simply show the ones you want on the map.If I want to go to a poi it's very easy to get the coordinates and input them into the satnav.(copilot on a samsung S7 edge).

It's a shame microsoft have discontinued autoroutes and withdrew support last year as it's the ultimate off line route planner in my opinion,so far it's still working and long may it continue.

Fortunately I have a good copilot who operates the netbook and a large A class dash where the netbook sits comfortably,it makes driving through unfamiliar areas quite easy, but I do understand your point, the system would be difficult for a lone traveller to operate, they would have to stop frequently to sort out the netbook.

... we tried using a tablet last October and it was a no go for us, as we often need to type up lots of stuff and trying to do that on a tablet we quickly found out is a no no ...

Invest in a small Bluetooth keyboard. I have one for my 7" tablet and it comes with a case that accommodates the keyboard in one half and the tablet in the other. Works really well ...

Yes thanks for that. I tried to - the problem was we were in France when we needed it, and in France they only sell AZERTY keyboards in their stores. That would have been even worse than trying to type on the tablet. Also I could not be doing with 2 different OP systems anyway and so decided to go for a Windows based notebook, and for that the Asus fitted the bill. On our recent 6 week trip to France it was worth its weight in gold - well almost. The only thing I don't like about the Asus is it comes with Windows 10 as standard, and we are not fans at all of Windows 10. I had to disable all the crxp that sends everything that you do up to 'The Cloud'. A right pain.

Yes it probably was PC World/Currys but it was online. It is the Asus Tranformer T100HA, and as good as it is it only has 32Gb of storage, which isn't a lot these days. No problem for the Asus as it has a USB port (unlike many of the notebooks), and we just stuff a 64Gb memory stick in it. But I still disabled/ deleted three quarters of the apps on the desktop. Don't need all that cluttering up the screen.
