Do any of you use head light protectors on your X250 I think I can see the plus side but is there any negative side to their use

Apart from the cost, apparently dirt eventually builds up between the protectors and the headlamp - specially in winter - which cuts down on the effectiveness of the headlights and necessitating the removal and cleaning of the protectors.

Not that I would know - I've never bothered with them and never had any problem with damaged headlamps (shouldn't have said that - it's bound to happen soon now that I've tempted Providence).

:D

Just something else to buy. It's a bit like the mirror shields. Just extra BLING

I have the mirror guards and not 100% sure if the guard saved my mirror but had an almighty clatter from a passing van which resulted in the guard having paint marks from the vans mirror. I reckon it did its job.
Got to admit they look good into the bargain lol !

Having had these on a number of previous models the X230 and X244 I always found them good in 20 years I never found dirt or gunge between the headlight and cover I would that her buy new protectors than a headlight.I had one pair on several X230 and the same with the following X244 on that model we had an attempt to steal them which resulted in a crack under the bonnet.
We then opted for a high power Hella headlight conversion.

All in all I would consider headlight covers an excellent investment.

Thanks

Thanks for the relevant replies, the dirt I had though of and another concern was if the head lights might over heat without the direct air cooling. I didn't intend buying any but got these today at a boot sale for a £10 note so guess I'll give them a try

The only reason I bought headlight protectors (which curiously are made in Australia??) was so that I had a position on which to put the beam deflectors, which come with the protectors and incidentally are made of black self-adhesive tape. Never had any problems with overheating, even with up-rated bulbs, and they are on there most of the time as well. If Fiat had made the standard headlight units with some marks on so that you knew where to put the deflectors then I wouldn't have bothered with the over-priced protectors. It would be very hit and miss as where to place the deflectors without them, as the Ducato headlights are just plain clear acrylic. I never take the protectors off, and just occasionally remove the self adhesive patches instead and keep them to use again. I once tried to very carefully remove the protectors and ended up with a small crack in the one, so I won't be doing that again.

Hi witzend,

I have them on my 2009 Ducato and use them so i don't have to stick the beam converters straight on to the base headlights and also think they may save an expensive replacement headlight for the sake of the 40 pounds they cost me and the 300 pounds for a new head light, but I do use my van mostly abroad.
As for mirror covers i also have them, call them bling if you like, I think they may save me 300 pounds and a roll of Duct tape.

Same here apart from I've never tried to remove the protectors.

there are numerous reports on other forums of headlights going crazy and cracking due to self-adhesive patches being fitted direst to the headlight.
So it may be cheaper to buy the headlight protectors than hew headlights.

To remove the protectors I never found a problem with mine although they were removed regularly Try a small amount of warm water on the top clips to soften the acrylic clips

We also bought protectors mainly for beam masking - we got a couple of sets of sticky black plastic masks with the protectors in the first place (which peel off pretty easily) but I then bought a couple of sheets of sticky black plastic off ebay for a couple of quid and have cut out a few more pairs. (And then forgot to take them the next time we went to France!)

I have had headlight protectors on my x250 for the last few years and had no problems except one day I noticed that I had lost one!
Whether it had been stolen to order or some passing drunk had ripped it off I couldn't say for sure.
I don't have mirror protectors though. I really should invest in them I think because I have already lost the driver's side one owing to a rented German wagon taking his and mine out just north of Callander.
Not using the van much just now so will probably wait until the Spring to get them.
