Depreciation

each to their own. i buy cheap, fit out and then run it till it dies, spending as little as necessary on maintenance. i am a staunch and proud member of the '' Last Owners Club''
my van cost under3 grand about 5 years ago,had a cambelt and pump, and an oil change
my car was £300 4 years ago and has had a new rad,and i'm seriously thinking of giving it an oil change

Good servicing and lots of oil changes keep em flying much longer SKINFLINT.:idea-007:

Go to these places where they clean your old oil and fill it back into the engine. Saves a bomb and is according to tests as good as.

No its not unless the bits that depleat like the long chain polymures are replaced and the anti corrosion components etc.
10/40 OIL ASDA £15 FILTER ABOUT £2/5 BUCKS

I have a humble Compass Drifter Motorhome, made in 1997. I paid 10k for it 3.5 years ago, and since then, I have covered about 45k miles. It is based on a Fiat Ducato 2.5D. It does have some damp in a localised area inside one of the cupboards, I have sealed the leak and patched the lining inside the cupboard. All in all, it is a nice enough van and it has served us well.

We have been looking at getting a newer one, but I can't be arsed with the bother of advertising it and taking people on test drives etc.

A couple of weeks ago, we 'phoned one of the 'we buy any.......' type places, and they sent a chap down from Sheffield to make me an offer.

After much sucking of teeth etc, he came up with an offer of 3k which he then upped to 4k,then a final offer of 4.5k, which I declined.

Based on this, I figured that the vehicle is probably worth at least 6k which means it has depreciated by about 4k in 3.5 years.

I then figured that with depreciation, and servicing and tax/insurance etc. it has cost me about 2k per year, excluding diesel.

Now I have thought about this, if you could hire a motorhome for 2k per year, you would wouldn't you? What would be the point of buying one? It can in fact cost up to 1k per weekto hire one.

All of this made me feel much better!:D

I really like this post....a very happy and optimistic attitude

That's what i used to believe as well. Because that's what we get told by the oil companies.
I saw a report about that oil cleaning chap who gave oil samples to german TÜV and other independent research labs and all certified that there was no difference between the cleaned oil and brand new oil.
As soon as i have a spare moment i will try to find some more information.

I remember seeing 'The 100,000 mile oil filter' many years ago on Tomorrow's World. I never saw it again!

I remember that too. They were testing them on Chevy taxis in Australia if I remember it rightly. I guess they got bought out.

I bought an Autocruise Sarasota from a dealer in 2011 for £31,000, saw the very same one for sale (private) for £26,000 a couple of months ago. £5000 depreciation in 4 years.

The prices, trade/ px/ private/ dealer, are all pretty unbelievable I thought when I bought mine a few years back.

Dealer prices: I found 3 very similar, between £24k to £28k

Private: the one I bought I paid £18.5k with some haggling

I also phoned a dealer about an almost new van they had for sale, and then gave him the details of the one I was going to buy privately and he offered me £12k for a trade in !

Phoned 'We buy any XXXX', they offered £12k, for the one I was about to buy !!

So for a vehicle to have a value somewhere between £12k or £28k someone is taking the p!ss.

Truth is none of them are really worth anything like people are having to pay for them it is all about market forces, any other van or vehicle is worth nothing after 10 years but for some strange reason motorhomes command high prices for what is essentially a pile of junk.

Charlie!

You can be so ostentacious.

this is how i look at my non investment

insurance £1,900 = £4.05 pw
