Going to fit air suspension to the rear of my kontiki,
Anyone got this done? I think I'm going to be using a company called AS Airsuspension near Warrington, has anyone had this done? What's your views? Costing just short of £1200 for the rear only with on board compressor switches and guages all fitted by them with 5 yrs warranty

They fitted air suspension and a rear camera to our last van. Really good friendly service. Family business, have their own motorhome.

Forgot to add that they used to give a good discount if ordered at one of the shows.

Can't speak for an Alko chassis or your fitting company but I had a Goldschmitt system fitted last year here in Greece. Twin gauges and compressor and it's the best €1000 I've spent on the van. No more rolling on corners or roundabouts, I don't get blown across half a lane when overtaken by a coach or big truck. It doesn't rock when stationary in high winds and I don't ground it getting on and off ferries. I think all motorhomes should be fitted with it as standard.

That`s who fitted mine a few years back :hammer: I`m number 7 in the testimonials.

Phil and Cath own it, Phil does the fitting and Cath does everything else ... LOL ... they are very helpful and really good to deal with.

First thing Jim is i`m afraid to tell you it costs a bit more than that, fitting is extra ( mine was £399 ) and came in at £1,497 all in with a bit of discount

It`s virtually a full day job as the wheels, brakes, hubs and everything is taken off for the fitting. All will be explained.

Cath will drop you at Warrington train station, she will then ring you when it`s done and pick you up again afterwards.

You can pop to Liverpool, Chester, Manchester the choice is yours.

When you arrive back the van will still be over the pit and you are more than welcome to inspect the work carried out from underneath the van.

Phil is very patient and will talk you through everything if that`s what you want and it takes as long as it takes.

It has completely transformed my van which now rides level and is unbelievably stable on the roads and in particular on motorways and roundabouts.

I am more than happy with the work and will readily recommended them as you can see from this post and my testimonial.

It is not a cheap job but in my opinion it is worth every penny and if i ever change this van i will have it fitted again by them without hesitation.

If you want any more info Jim message me and i`ll let you have my contact number.

I have no links or connection with A.S. Air Suspension, i am just a very very happy customer

P.S.

Forgot to say, they can arrange an overnight stop for you if you want especially with the distance you`ll be travelling.

I'd say you got a damn good deal there, I was quoted £8300 for a full air Goldschmitt system from Travelworld in Telford, needless to say I declined to take them up on their offer....

They must be talking all 4 wheels for that price surely. Mine is only fitted to rear wheels. The guys in Greece explained it like this. A delivery van on my chassis would, generally, leave the depot full, make deliveries and come back empty. That's if it's used efficiently. Some days maybe only half loaded. But I'm driving about with the maximum payload constantly and probably going over some rougher roads than, say,a UPS van or similar. When you think about it in those terms then fitting air suspension is a no brainer. There's no maintenance involved, other than washing the salt off the bellows if you've been driving in winter following a grit spreader. As I said, the best "add on" I can think of and money well spent. I've read of folk on here with more skills than me fitting their own systems and that brings the cost down considerably.

Just read your testimonial there mate, I'm waiting on an email from kath and it looks like I'm going to provisionally book for some time in October,

I fitted mine at home, it was a bit of a palaver! I have a Renault master with a alko chassis and it took the best part of the day to fit, but it's transformed the handling on motorways and a much better ride around town,

I would have fitted the kit myself but none of the company's that do the type for my alko chassis supply them for diy, I was going to make it myself but I have no time with other projects and I don't think the insurance would be too happy to continue my insurance

I'm really pleased with the air suspension on mine. It is only on the rear, but it is full air suspension, not air assistance.

After a few days parked, the air leaks out and the suspension settles. That can cause issues if you're picky about level (though sometimes pressing the button to let the air out is useful if stopping on a downhill slope).

When starting up after a few days I have to give the air pump a minute or two to get the air up again. But that delay is good for the turbo anyway!

Hi Hairydog,

You've confused me :) Why does the air leak out? I'm guessing the system you have was factory installed and not retro-fitted? Can you give me a bit more info?

Cheers,

Pat

Yes something doesn't seem right with air leaking, as pat says is your air suspension after market or what ? Where did you get it fitted ?

air suspension

I fitted rear air suspension to both my hymer and then my auto trail.with the hymer i just used a cheap 12v compressor to adjust the ride as needed.the autotrail system came off ebay with a compressor dials etc.both systems fitted on the driveway and you dont need to remove hubs or even the tires.its a very easy diy job.michael

That is a wide sweeping statement!
On my Alko chassis that is fitted to a Renault master you do have to remove brake calibers/hub assembly/brake disc and ABS sensor, then because Alko use the base vehicle running gear on their chassis I had to modify the air bag support to allow the handbrake cable enough clearance to operate,
Having spent fifty years in the motor trade the job didn't faze me but still took longer than anticipated,
Undoubtedly just fitting an air bag in place of a bump stop is simple!
BUT a proper Alko chassis has two swinging arms, and brackets need to be fitted to both the swinging arms and chassis plus on my Renault hub you cannot fit the airbag carrier without a strip down, I beleave on the Alko Fiat ducato chassis you can fit the carrier retaining bolts from the outside so doesn't require as much as a strip down

I think that you (and many others in this thread) are discussing fitting Air Assistance, not Air Suspension. Nothing wrong with that, but is is not the same.

Your right enough oh hairy one, I may have got it wrong myself, the kit that gets fitted to my alko chassis from AS Suspension "assists the original suspension" ..... Either way it's still going to be on air
