We are planning to take Hopscotch8 to the Outer Hebrides ...south to north...Barra S Uist N Uist Lewis then Harris

We have approx 3 weeks on the islands, can anyone advise on how to split the time up between the islands please?

Also any special places to see wild life.

thanks

Rob

What sort of things do you like doing? We are keen walkers and found that the weather pretty much determined where we would be and when; not a lot of room for wet dogs and walking gear in a camper! Also, there are not a lot of indoor opportunities on Barra and the Uists. When the weather was great, we spent 5 days on N Uist alone. Have you read Peter May's Trilogy? There is now a trail visiting some of the iconic places mentioned in the books. Loads to do in NW Lewis.

Book your crossings in advance.
That one goes barra > eriskay then berneray > harris I believe
I got stuck (not a bad thing in itself) on barra and uist/berneray as I didn't prebook the inter island Ferrys
Love the outer hebrides though. Can't wait to go back!

We were in the Hebrides last year, travelling north to South. We pre-booked only the Ullapool to Stornaway and Barra to Oban. The inter island ferries were not booked and we got on no bother.
You will really enjoy the experience, the island scenery is spectacular and the residents so friendly.
There is a lovely restaurant at the ferry at Leverburgh, really good food.
I can also recommend an unofficial, crofter run site at Uig on Lewis. A portacabin with toilets, showers, waste disposal and fresh water, all on a beautiful beach. All this for a meagre price of £2per person per night.

Go onto cal Mac ferry website and input the route(s) you want to use. Or phone 0800 066 500 . Found the staff very helpful. We are doing the Hop 08 route in July. Booked a site every few nights so we can get hook up, empty waste etc. We hope it's worth all the research we've been doing and taking tips from various websites. It certainly makes interesting reading finding out what other people have done. Good luck. ☺
