I've searched the forum but can't find my specific issue so any advice would be really appreciated.

The grill on our oven in the van seems to have hardly any pressure. The oven seems OK though.

The grill is taking an age to ignite and when it does there are only 3 VERY small flames visible on one side of the burner next to the back of the oven. Also if I stop pushing the control knob in it goes out almost every time.

Any ideas please?

probably caked up with grease from the hob and boiling pans etc. A common problem ...remove and clean.

On oven combination style grills the same things occur from fat evaporating and steam etc generating general grunge.

Also a lot of grills have a wire mesh radiant that become detached over the years and aren't replaced sharp and a bugger to fit, this does affect performance a little ( found on seperate grills)

Thanks Channa , the grill is in the top of the oven so the hobs can't be to blame in this case. Also the wire mesh radiant looks fine... Hmmmm

probably ,as Channa says, greased up. this can be caused by cooking anything in the oven that might spit a bit, have a feel of the burners. you might get away with steam cleaning,if you have one, otherwise it's a strip out and clean of the burner unit

If it is lighting albeit poorly and staying lit, thermocouple is ok, if it is only lighting 3 small flames that would indicate a partially blocked jet, or and a blocked burner bar. It doesn't take a lot for them to become clogged.

Is the flame yellow ? or bright blue like it should be ? yellow again suggests a blockage. (yellow are the dangerous ones)

If the van has been laid up a while it has been known insects setting up home in the burner bar give the same symptoms you describe.( we had this issue a lot on water heaters on statics laid up over winter)

Good news is the remedy is all the same take out and clean.

Solved

Thanks for the replies. It's resolved now. It was user error brought about by a poor manual for the appliance (Spinflo combination oven and grill) .

You are supposed to pull out a small shelf at the top of the oven when using the grill. I pulled that out and had the issues above. I decided to see what happened if I left the shelf in and tried to light the grill. It lit fine! It stayed working after pulling the shelf out so it appears you need to light the grill with the shelf in and then pull it out. Not what it says in the manual. It states it must be pulled out PRIOR to lighting the grill!

Solved though and many thanks for the replies.

Seemed really odd to me too so I called Thetford to see what they thought. The techy didn't believe me so got me to go out and reproduce it. I could do it every time.

He had never heard of it before and confirmed there are no switches on the slide out panel. All it does is deflect the heat away from the control knobs.

All very weird but I can reproduce it every time. All I can think is that it must be something to do with airflow or something but even that sounds unlikely.

Whatever it is/was we can now use the grill again so thanks to all who replied.

The shelf only pulls out about an inch and deflects the heat away from the oven/grill control knobs.

well that's a definite mystery to me ! i can't think what might be happening that explains it- i'll probably never be able to sleep again
