Hi all,

Is it possible/sensible/safe to use a small microwave oven when hooked up to mains electric?

I'm guessing it's OK as an 800watt microwave would draw about 3.5amps at 240volts but wanted to hear from someone who knows.

Thanks all.

PS As this would be a safety issue for me, please only reply one way or another if you absolutely know the answer.

possible sensible and safe. no different to any other correctly wired appliance in a correctly wired van!.

Microwaves state 800w as an example but draw more amperage on start up, others can explain the technical reasons better than I.

Like any other appliance, if they overload the system or their is a fault the MCB or rcd will kick in

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. Nick

Probable safer than burning gas in a confined space but what Channa says is correct.

We have one built in. But if you are wildcamping its not alot of use. SWMBO said the other day that it would be more use as a cupboard and why don't we just remove it. It has been used occasionally when on EHU but if it stopped working it would not get replaced.

You can buy 500w microwave ovens designed for caravans/motorhomes, we have one and use it with a 1000w inverter but if we are going to be on EHU we take the one from the kitchen

As always, great answers! Thank you all so much for your advice and comments. Nick

My van a Compass Castaway came with one fitted at manufacture. They are Low Power and aimed at Motorhomes and Caravans.

This is very similar to mine :- Low Wattage Microwave Oven - 700w Caravanning Sale Seasonal Categories

It works very well indeed and i`ve never had any problems with it.

The Father-in-Law bought a 1500W monster cheap because that was his only concern ..... it had to be cheap ........ LOL

It`s OK on one of the main sites with 16 amp EHU but regularly trips the smaller sites ( CL`s / CS`s ) that only have say 5/6 amp EHU.

As above, fine and useful :)

SWMBO said the other day that it would be more use as a cupboard and why don't we just remove it.

Tell her to just use the microwave as a cupboard. Win win.
