I have always had van conversions.... For some reason I feel safer in a metal shell as I never use sites, always layby's etc..

I looked at cab over beds and traditional Motorhomes and mostly don't like them.

My previous van was an Autosleeper Topaz on a VW T4 very solid old bus.... I now have a Fiat Murvi Morello on a 2.8. Much faster van and good economy.
Doesn't feel as bulletproof as the VW though.

What I really want is a 4x4 Motorhome, pref a van conversion. Seems a rare beast...

Here we go: The ultimate... Merc unimog... Too slow. Want to be able to cruise at 70 all day.
Fuel efficient is also a priority... I love the Sportsmobile USA fords but no good for the UK with 6.0 engines.
Mercedes sprinter 4x4.. Rare and expensive. No one seems to convert them so would be a buy the van and then get it done job.

Bimobile bocklet etc big bucks!
Iveco 4x4 looks great but again not easy to get in the Uk...
Ex army trucks look cool but I don't want to go bigger than 3.5 tonne really as ferries go up and harder to go to supermarkets etc...
Don't like demountables as like a walk through from the cab.... Some of the US trucks with remounts have a crawl space through which would be ok..but again huge engines. ( needed though )

So what do I want?

Iveco 4x4 ex military.... And get it converted?

Any one got similar?

James.

Theres always a handful of UK registered commercial 4x4 Sprinters on Ebay. If you want a converted one, you will need to check out mobile.de.

If the bog standard 4x4 Sprinter is not up to what you want, then there are a couple of aftermarket firms.

I think you will find a lot of the 4x4 Ivecos restricted to 55MPH

I think a 4x4 Sprinter would be ok but I want it lifted a bit...

Are the Ivecos restricted? Not heard that... Probably can be removed. Re chipped etc

That County looks like an old heap to be honest... At the least it would need the inside stripping out and starting again ;)

They look great on the road those... Very high up.

If there was still one in good condition I could be tempted.

The other one looks great but again a bit tired..

Thanks for all the links... This is just what I needed.

Those Broughtons look fantastic.. Just what I'm after.

Don't let rugged off road type looks come into it. I drove over this field about 15 minutes before this bloke, not that I'm suggesting a 4x4 Sprinter is better then a Daily, it's not, just in this case it was. lol :)
Of course more down to weight and bad loading.

Hehe he's got in a mess there :)

I like the looks of the Iveco but realistically they will be too expensive.

Sprinter would be great... Or the Broughton mentioned above.

I'd also like a Toyota troop carrier to mod but don't see them either in the Uk.

As I have a Toyota 79HDJ (not a model you can find in Europe) with Bimobil cabin, I would definitely say that a Troopie would be the way to go. However, if you want a RHD Troopie they are as rare as rocking horse £$%^. If you hunt round mobile.de you might find a LHD one but it won't be cheap. However, if you can be bothered with messing about with importation from Oz, you could buy this: 2007 Toyota Landcruiser VDJ78R Workmate Troopcarrier. Not something that has ever appeared in Europe but the V8 is absolutely awesome. A$22.5K at the moment is around £12K.

Just about all 4x4's will cost you more in fuel & tyres. The new Iveco 4x4 is an amazing bit of kit but way too expensive & really too small for a reasonable size camper.
