Breakdown cover... RAC? Or is there a specialist?

Advise on Breakdown cover would be muchly appreciated please.

Is RAC ok.. Or is there some kind of specialist for older VW campervans?
We are going with a specialist insurer, but when I quizzed them about the breakdown cover they offered as extra, it sounded like they just contracted to the local garages.
So I'm thinking the RAC should be as good right?
 
I think this depends on were you are going if you are going into Europe I can not say if RAC are good or not, all I can say is we have used Safeguard insurance for a few years now and that includes breakdown cover, and what is done by the AA and the service we got from them was fantastic.

Hello Flowerpower

Is there any chance of you taking your dub into Europe?.

I have cover with ADAC (A German AA equivalent).

It cost £89. They will recover us when I am driving any vehicle if I break down 1 mile from home or 1k’s miles away in the South of Italy.

They will take our camper to a garage and if after 3 days (during which time we’ll be put up in a hotel) it has not been sorted, they will fly us home and tow the camper home separately.

I did lots of research into them. And Interestingly their partner in the UK is the AA.

Check them out...

We're mainly planning to stay around Scotland, and the outer isles. With maybe the very occasional little trip into England to visit family etc.
No Europe planned at the moment, although never say never.

I have a t4 and use the Caravan and Camping Club - suggest you give them a call. Also, visit a dedicated T4 web site - there'll be loads of suggestions on there.
 
If you are a member of the camping and caravanning club then they offer a complete breakdown cover with the RAC called arrival which covers you for just about anything...plus being a member of the C&CC allows you to go to weekend rallies with DA's etc..low cost camping with other likeminded people who have knowledge and experience to help you out...they are mostly caravanners but also motorhomers like us go along....just don't go to the motorhome section as they are not nice people who run the group are a very rude and ignorant...pity as there were some nice people who went along.
If you are in Perthshire you would be in the Perth and Angus DA...we usually go with the fife DA but you can go to any meet organised by any group of the C&CC. As has been mentioned before the temporary holiday sites are good value....the DA and THS are the only reason we are in the C&CC

Also forgot fife DA do a Halloween meet at the Scone club site (cheaper than paying the full site fees) and also do a new year meet there.

Hi Nesbo been thinking of them as going to France in September but can't find details of the cover in English, just the price. Any suggestions? Ps just got my renewal quote from AA. £190 pound but knocked down to £99 with a phone call! Do ASDAC do a monthly deal?
 
Personally I would never use the RAC, after 2 bad experiences, I use Britannia Rescue whose services to my Bongo were excellent. They like many use contractors but I was told they pay promptly so always get taken first on busy days. They usually come within 30 mins and do try to be helpful. It on the other hand has taken over 3 hours to get help from the RAC
 
ADAC Cover

I have ADAC Plus breakdown cover for both me and my partner and it covers us for all of Europe UK and Ireland at a cost of 98 Euros and we are covered for whatever we drive.
 
been looking at RAC cover myself. they have an offer on at the mo. free C ANDCC membership for 12 months.
 
Breakdown cover

I have a Smile Co-op bank account which costs £14 a month. It provides RAC breakdown cover including Europe and also worldwide travel insurance. Not a bad deal....:tongue:

Thanks everyone.
The guy rung earlier than expected and didn't want to risk driving home without breakdown cover so took basic RAC for now.. May upgrade though and will definitely check out that C &CC offer.
 
Comfort horizon

My insurance is with Comfort Horizon which includes RAC cover, we recently had a clutch go over 100 miles away from home at midnight and were taken home on a low loader with no problem - impressive service>
 
I was checking on my AA terms and conditions as I'm moving from a Ford Freda to an Auto-sleepers Nuevo. The AA has a blanket rule and won't repair or Relay vehicles over 3.5 tonnes or 7'6" with.

The Nuevo is 7'7.3", 1.3 inches too wide!

It's got to be ADAC, great company and cheaper than most, don't worry about the language they speak English.
 
I am a big fan of the AA, as a garage mechanic/manager/owner I have seen the services offered by all of them, AA is ahead by miles, varying degrees of cover depending what you can afford, personally I have everything, I am going to change to ADAC shortly as I am about to venture onto the continent for 6 months , AA is sorting this out for me, the cost is about the same, the switch will be seamless and my monthly payments wont change
 
RAC Arrival is great for large Motor Homes

Hi all

We had a 70's Winnebago Automatic which broke down needing a new radiator. RAC ARRIVAL is available to C&CC members as already stated.

To be recovered we needed the same HUGE truck that recovers HGVs. I am not aware of any other service who would supply this at normal rates. Because the garage failed to effect a proper repair we broke down again and were again recovered in the same way the next day.

With Arrival there is NO LIMIT to the size of vehicle that is covered - even a double decker bus conversion. Also, as far as I can remember, there is no age limit on the vehicle.

If you break down on the way to a campsite that has been pre-booked Arrival will transport you there and bring you back EVEN IF that is to and from the continent (you pay the ferry charges).

SO for all of use with classic (old) vans and/or those with BIG vans this seems to be the very best option available. But of course the sun will shine and nothing will ever go wrong to spoil our travels ??
