tow cars

Motorhome with car on a-frame?

Simple, 2 of us plus large dog. Useful to have transport wherever we visit if we need it. Don't want to store a trailer when not in use.

Answer = A-frame

(We used to have a scooter on a rack but the dog couldn't cope with it)

We have a Smart on a trailer.
We also have a dog and while he can manage the Quad when we got out rounding up cattle I wouldn't like to try it in traffic

Also, ever tried parking a Motorhome in Barnstaple?

Sorry never found it a problem, friends live there.

Right, so you park the MH up somewhere & use the car? So how is that better than Towing a caravan & parking that up somewhere & using the car. The car can be smaller, that's true, but the motorhome is far dearer & carries extra weight with its engine.

I have mostly used a caravan when choosing to park up on a site for 3 days or more, but the whole point of the MH to me is the ability to go anywhere a car can, OK it's a largish car, but even the tightest lanes & tiniest villages are used by tractors & trailers, milk tankers & delivery vehicles, so where's the problem with driving & parking a MH in them? I love having ALL my stuff with me wherever I am, so I can have a quick cuppa, cook a meal, change my gear, have a wash & brush up or a quick 40 winks Martini style (any time, any where). Leaving a caravan or a motorhome somewhere & driving away from it removes that flexibility.

Not saying what others do is wrong, just trying to explain why it really doesn't make sense for us.

There's possibly a 'safety' angle too - towing a small car with a large motorhome may well feel safer to many than towing a large caravan with a smaller car.

Yes, you can't really see from the photo but it has the latest electronic 'RVi Brake 2' setup :)
Cheers - looks like a nice setup!
Didn't realise they'd got system that over came the issue with vacuum power brakes now.

theservo doesnt make the brakes better ,just easier to apply . put a car on a brake tester with and without servo you cant tell the difference.there never was a problem with servo not working .
the problem was that with a sliding hitch the brakes come on as you reverse .or should . electric or hydraulic systems have been around for twenty or so years but they dont get used by most aframe makers .

If this hot weather continues for much longer, I'm thinking of towing an ice-cream van behind me! :):drive::)

Totally agree the whole point of my campervan is ive got my home with me at all times, the home thats mobile, and its for exploring without having to return to point "A" if basing yourself and driving round returning to base is your thing rent a caravan/cottage. No tax/mot/insurance/maintainance/servicing etc.

Well I am glad that I am not the only one who is a bit confused by the towing of a car. One person say we have it in case we need it, that seems a lot of trouble for a just in case, if you travel in your m/h why would you wont it in case, if you brake down then the recovery people take you. A bike a motor bike yes but a car sorry I still can not see why, ( answers on a post card please Lol ) thanks for all the replies though. :drive: :drive:

Have you ever tried parking a motorhome at the casino in Monaco?
Much better to leave the MH on site and pop into town in the car for the evening.

No for one of things like that we use a cab, as you know it is not the easiest place to park. Cannes is just the same :drive: :drive:

O dear I got one

My old rust bucket has no power steering but it did not bother me until we went into Whitby town center. We was on a site for a week and went in the MH for trips but this day ended up a nightmare for me and everybody else in Whitby. It was a solid traffic jam down the hill to the very small car park. I had never been before. When I saw the car park there was no way I could get in and park has it was jammed solid with cars. There was a couple of motor homes against the far wall but they had got there early (which we did the next day) There was no chance they could get out until the car park emptied again in the evening. I just entered the entrance from a very tight roundabout and needed to back up to escape going in altogether. But all the other cars behind me was tight up and it was cayos. I had to go back about fifteen cars and ask them to back up a few inches each until I could get a couple of foot to reverse. It took me a few goes going back a foot or so until I could escape. After that i decided to get a little old tow car to go with my old motorhome. I must agree it is an expensive way to get about as its more tax but only £30 a year and extra insurance. My missis is not to good on her feet so it is ideal for her we can fold the back down and get the dog in which we can't do on an electric bike. We don't take it on short hops or wild camping but we do go with friends for over a week sometimes and put the Safari room up. We don't have to pack everything away and just drive off when we want to. I am restricted to 60mph but my bus don't go much faster than that anyway. i could get a bigger car and caravan but then I would not be on these meets I love coming to as it is all motorhomes. If we are a bit remote and need to go to a supermarket for supplies it is so much easier to get in a park. I know its pros and cons but for us it works. OMG I just remembered we got a TV too but thats mostly for the missis again as I usually go to the pub.

I wouldn't be without the car for some trips. It's all about what you are doing on that particular trip and having a choice, and the flexibility to choose.

1. Out on my own with my wife use bicycles or moped.
2. Touring Europe use moped.
3. On a site in Uk with grandchildren take the CAR.

We only use regular sites with The Grandchildren because it suits them better and we love being them, and taking them out to all sorts of places, we also, love touring wild on our own and would never take the car.

Choice it's what's life's all about.

Ha ha, TBH, we will be going to the annual family gathering at Bala shortly & will be taking both the van & the car!

This is the one time we park up the van on hook-up for several days with assorted caravans & tents full of family all around us. The extra vehicle will be used for towing the dinghy (no tow bar on the van yet) and for taking various non-driving family members to & fro, possible runs out for those who don't want to get all wrinkley in the lake & trips to the town.

Basically we are using the van as if it were a caravan! As you say, choice is good. :camper:

as I never go on sites,it makes good sense to have a moped or scooter which is easily deployed, to explore small villages and tracks before taking the van into them. but I too can't grasp why you'd drag a car round with you. mind you I don't understand why anyone would take a tv on holiday either! that's something you see on French aires, rows of tightly parked m/h s all shut up with flickering light on the blinds, and not a soul in sight !

I intend to get a small motorbike to carry in our garage later, ideal for shopping or exploring villages that do not allow 4.5t on their roads.
My view is we might as well tow a caravan with a car, rather than tow a car behind the motorhome.
As for the TV.... when you have kids in the van, and the weather is poor, a DVD/TV is a godsend!

I get your point about having a tv for the kids,we just never did it,although with 4 kids to keep amused we got through a lot of modelling clay, and I could hardly pass a printers without raiding their skip for paper

Purely on the cost point, my experience is that it makes no difference to the fuel used towing the car or not, this is mainly due to the fact I travel slower with the car attached but have more weight, net result same fuel used just takes a bit longer to get there.
