I have often wondered why people tow a car behind there m/h. I am sure someone will tell me very soon but to me it makes no sense. When we are in Spain we see people arrive on a site with m/h and a car, and there they stay for several months. M/H never moves and they go out in the little car and return to the same place each night. Now to my mind you would be far better to pull a caravan down there, then you have your car, and somewhere to live, and less money.

Then there are people who drag a car around all summer from Aires to a Aires, and say they use it to go shopping or visit other places, ok so how do so many other people manage to visit the said other places, or do they have a van that is to big for them to handle in towns.

The other think of cores is it a status thing, I have a m/h but I also have a car, and enough money to was on fuel, and sod the environment.

This post is not intended to upset or be rude to anybody, but I am genuinely curios to know. :drive: :drive:

Always wonder why people tow cars behind on frames as surely they are wearing the car out as they drive, wouldn't it be better on a trailer??

Just my though

I have asked this a few times myself, a caravan towing the car seems just odd somehow. :lol-053:

But each to their own, I prefer to have a different site every night (mostly, but there are occasions where we stay put for a week sailing the dinghy). The big difficulty for me is that when off in the car you cannot have your wardrobe, toilet & cooker with you, so you are pretty much restricted to basic tourist activities, picnics & meals out.

as I never go on sites,it makes good sense to have a moped or scooter which is easily deployed, to explore small villages and tracks before taking the van into them. but I too can't grasp why you'd drag a car round with you. mind you I don't understand why anyone would take a tv on holiday either! that's something you see on French aires, rows of tightly parked m/h s all shut up with flickering light on the blinds, and not a soul in sight !

Not for me either. I suppose if you full time and have a massive camper it could make sense, but other then that seems more trouble then it's worth.
Besides, no way I'm restricting myself to 60MPH on holiday. :)

Don't have a TV at home, certainly not gonna get one for the van :)

I dont see any difference between car or scooter moped both are just another form of transport. Not everybody can or wants to ride a scoot but can drive a car. I see more sense in the car than scoot easier for shopping , it can rain all it likes , no need for carrying helmets& clothing and can be used as a trailer for odds and sods.
No I don't tow a car or carry a scoot as I think both are just too much bother but each to their own and as far as the enviromental concerns I don't think the majority of MH are exactly Eco friendly

Rv toad

Hi dave & mary,

I think the idea came from America were they drive the monster size RV's.they try to keep them out of town on RV parking areas, so they tend to pull a car on the back for getting into town and site seeing. The Americans call them TOADS or Dingy.

Yes snowbirds I think you are right, and in America you can understand it, but no one seems to have come up with a sensible answer on here yet with regard to the uk and Europe, even people who normally have an answer for every thing lol. :drive: :drive:

We are looking at an electric assist bike for my other half to put on the camper , i'll just use a normal bike

The car thing looks way to complex and bumps up the ferry costs , a big pain reversing and if you do go on a site they'd probabily want more money from you these days

We do have a TV at home - but never watch broadcast TV, just a couple of programmes a week (currently my 2 are luther and the white queen) on catchup. I hate the idea of a TV in the truck.

60mph - oh how i dream of going that fast :hammer:

well i have the best set up. a mini artic . 7 seater unit 20ft living space and a vehicle for sneaking into those little places . like gibralter etc . ideal for shopping or going into town . also the overlap is greater so very short total length of outfit .

Looking forward to meeting you sometime , that rig of yours looks really cool

Bike is about where I would go as far as additional transport, perhaps a scooter one day, although the electric assist bikes make a lot of sense.

I think we all have the best set up for our own preferences. At 3.5 Tonne, there are only very few access problems, I can get into little villages no problem, shop anywhere. Even the highest speed limits in Europe are a gentle cruise and I can mix it with the Germans at 120 MPH if I choose, but not with a side wind ;) and barring low trees and slightly less ground clearance I can virtually go where Land Rovers go. Hopefully my next van will have a full set of lockers and go where LandCruiser, G Wagens and Ivecos can go. :)

Wonder how long I'll have to wait for the to be an abundance of VW Crafter 4Motions around.

pay load lacking though .need lots if going maroc . need to take lots wine and beer then you dont pay their high prices . plus big fuel tanks for leaving maroc . i can get right back to uk if needed . mind i fill up before crossing to uk . plus need space for surfboards . spear fishing gear etc . plus lots of fb pies to tease others with . ha ha .

This year I have met 2 motor homers whose wives have actually driven their cars behind the motor home so as to have a car to use while in Cornwall motor homes have been parked up for weeks while they have been here neither van has been exceptionally large either

That is unbelievable, may be they did not get on to well together and it saved arguing lol :drive: :drive:

Why choose a motorhome over a car + caravan anyway?
In a lot of ways, the car + caravan (or car+van) makes more sense.

Once you've got a big motorhome in the first place, it seems to make sense to have a cheap to run car to use when you get there.
Quite possible this car is their normally daily transport and it works out cheaper than having a hefty car capable of towing a big caravan as daily transport.

I still fancy getting a cheap to run car for scooting around the country (currently got a tuned 1996 M3 and bike engined kit car awaiting MOT, though one will have to go soon; and a vito van as well as motorbikes) I would like to do my C+E and get a 2 car trailer, then ideally I'd have a fun car and a cheap to run car on the back so I could 'full time' where I wanted without restricting my choice of transport :).

i have a jincheng dax in the back of mine . works fine for sight seeing and playing around on . can get three in the garage .but usually only 1or 2.
