Oyster samy solar plus

As the delighted owner of an Eldiss Aspire 255 I have come down to earth with a bump after realising that due to the amount of roof area taken up with skylights I've precious little area for installing solar panel and satellite dome.

After getting quotes from dealers on the solar front the best they can offer is 4X20 wattt flexible panels which I don't really want therefore i'm considering fitting an Oyster Samy Solar Plus combined solar panel/satellite dish contraption. Unfortunately the internet is bereft of any real owner reviews (positive or otherwise!) so I'm asking the forum:

1. Does anyone have one of these fitted and how does it perform?
2. Is it affected by 'reasonable' breezes - I've heard most 'pop-ups' are bothered by this.
3. Are they reliable and has anyone had reason to get one repaired under warranty - one dealer less than happy to fit this despite having adverts plastered all round his shop because of problems getting spares for Oyster systems in the past.

In case you haven't guessed I'd really like to fit this system purely because of the restricted space BUT ................ with my luck I'd find out that it was little short of useless AFTER the fitting! Seems strange that despite trawling the internet I can't find a genuine review despite them being on the market for several years?

Found this on another forum;

"For a different solar panel you might consider fitting a combined solar panel and satellite dish - assuming of course that you haven't got either yet.

Due to the lack of flat roof space on my MH I had a Oyster Samy Solar Plus system fitted this year. See it at: ten Haaft GmbH mobile Satanlagen

It's a great bit of well made kit which uses the satellite/GPS system to line up the solar panel at 90 degrees to the sun. This means that the smaller 60cm square panel is highly efficient. Even in the 'parked' horizontal position it charges the leisure battery more than adequately for my needs. It can also be programmed to lock onto the sun at dawn and track it all day. The sat dish is 65cm so pretty good in northern europe. Clever stuff!

Downside is that they are not cheap but not too much dearer than buying separate systems and only one fitting fee. Food for thought?"

Thanks

Thanks for the reply and there's no doubt that in theory this is the answer to my problem but is this your personal experience of the system? I'm anxious to have someone who has operated this system over a period of time to give me their honest evaluation because as we know you never find a fish salesman crying "rotten fish!" I can only find statements from the manufacturer and their NEVER going to give you a warts n all report.

No it's not my experience, but that of another motorhomer on another forum. 'Fraid that's all I could find:)

No problem

Thanks Robmac

Don't apologise! You found out more than I could and initially I did think (hope) you had one fitted but hopefully you can now see my predicament ............... does anyone in the UK have one of these fitted and willing to give me an opinion?

My search for the 'The Truth' continues..................!

Hello

Am I correct in thinking that your motorhome is 7.3 mtrs long.
If so it beggars belief that you don't have room on the roof for the normal solar panels and a satellite dish.
I have a 5.99 mtr Rapido which has 1 large and 2 small rooflights. I have 2x80 watt panels (could have 3 easily). These cost less than £100 each. There is lots of info on this forum on solar panels including some very good posts by Techno 100 with pics.
I also cannot understand why you want to spend so much on an automatic sat. dish. I have a Camos crank up Plus which I can usually tune in faster than an automatic dish and the reception is good throughout most of Europe with the exception of Spain. There is no intrusion into the van except a small handle.
Funnily enough I saw one of these contraptions very recentley in Berlin. Can't say I was too impressed. I don't have to lower my solar panels when it gets windy and you would also have to lower the dish before I would have to. Incidentally I got great TV reception in Berlin.
At a few pounds change out of £3000 are you sure you are not falling for salesmans b******t

Hi Blue Skies

Your last sentence sums up my concern ................ I don't want to listen to salesman b******s but would much rather listen to a customer because as you point out, with little change out of 3000K this is not a decision to be taken lightly. Unfortunately my layout is the opposite of your i.e. 2 large skylights and 1 small and I've read with interest Techno's posts and would definately go for a cheaper option but .............. there's not a lot of room up there!

The options being banded around are a Road Pro dome (my preferred option with it being so windy up where i stay) but with only a metre between the skylights it would take up most of the room leaving no room for a solid panel. This has left virtually nothing for solar panels so my dealer suggests 4 flexi panels (not my favoured option) scattered around giving 80 watts which isn't quite what I need. The Oyster, which is eyewateringly expensive does offer me more solar power as the 50 watt panel uses GPS to follow the sun during the day when parked up giving the same power as a 150 watt panel (salesman patter!) and would fit. However with precious few of them going around I do wonder if it's because they're not all they're cracked up to be?
