Bit of an update.

Michelle was admitted yesterday. Quite the red carpet treatment really. Seen by the top consultant and various others, Had surgery this morning and despite being originally told time constraints usually meant most ended up with a stent which takes ten minutes and were then scheduled for stone removal possibly months down the line she was in theatre this morning with the top guy for two hours. The stones were crushed and a four week Stent installed. Appointments made for stent removal in four weeks, Further scans in three months and a review a month after that. Thats more like it.

Amazingly she was discharged this afternoon and is now home which is a massive relief. No real pain yet which is odd as from what I have read it can be pretty bad. Early days but fingers crossed. Within ten minutes of leaving hospital she was in Morrisons buying a roast chicken. :D

The moral of the story I reckon is if you get fobbed off. Don't stand for it.

We hope she recovers well Barry.

Not everyone feels they can complain still, they fear it may affect their future patient/doc relationship, when it usually doesn't

Thanks Kev. Its worth noting as well that for just about everything you might have wrong with you there is generally a pretty good support group on Facebook. Now I know Facebook can be full of nutters and serial moaners, trolls and fruitloops but I found the Kidney stones support group (there are a couple) pretty good as well. I only discovered them two days ago but they were quite helpful to get other peoples experiences, what to expect etc.

It seems one of the major things that stresses people out about hospitals is parking!! I got lucky at James Cook over the two weekends we were there. I went through on the bike on Friday night on one visit expecting the roads like the A66 and Middlesbrough to be gridlocked and the car park stacked around 5-6pm. None of it. I think everyone goes home after lunchtime these days on a Friday. Darlington bypass was bad but I just filtered through that. Takes an hour in the car and 40-45 min on the bike.

What was surprising is there is no bike park at James Cook. Its free for bikes but you still have to find a car park space and occupy it. This I found ridiculous. However Friday night there were loads of spaces. Other days its packed, certainly during the day.

Your blue badge will have helped I expect.

Not so much as its almost impossible to get a space in the limited number of blue badge spaces. On two occasions I Got the last remaining space in the main north entrance car park. What the hell do you do if you can't get a space? Thats partly why I took the bike on Friday night thinking it would be rammed and it wasn't. They are probably sick of me but I might write to them suggesting they find a bike park. With spaces at a premium its crackers that whilst bikes are free they should take up a car space although if bikers had any sense they would park in one with a bike already in it. Bizarrely though I never saw one single motorcycle.

You can park in any bay with a BB

When I was going to Leeds for 20 days of Radiotherapy, the decided to cordon off almost all of the BB bays, I let my feelings be known, and parked in whatever space was handy then appealed the tickets, no one seemed to know why they were out of use.

Personally I think they should allow scooters in the hospital. I would have gone on the Biff Chariot then. Its a long bloody walk to the ward even if you do nab a disabled spot. I don't see whats wrong with that. I might add that to my list of demands now they are sh*t scared of me.

Get a mobility scooter, save your legs, fits in the boot, or a wheelchair so Michelle can push you.

I was under the impression that Barry now has a body like a racing snake.:)

He's still out there kayaking, so I say hats off to that young fella 💪👌😁(y)

Great news about Michelle.

NB: make damn sure they take the stents out on time! I know a local lady where the hospital kept deferring her kidney stent removal procedure (kept cancelling the op last minute, then not notifying about re-scheduled appointment, then cancelling last minute again etc.)
The stent was left in place 4 months past the original removal date - she was in complete agony by that time, with risk of sepsis etc.

Keep on their case!!! 👿 We all know none of us should have to do this, but that is very much the reality/state of play with our NHS these days.

I don't think they would dare mess her about now Marie. I think they are crapping themselves now its all been documented and its a catalogue of errors. I would share it but Michelle doesn't want me to. We saw more consultants, doctors, and specialist nurses over that 24 hours than the rest of the ward did put together while she was in. I imagine they are hoping it will now all go away. Lets see how it progresses but I am still expecting a formal response. As yet apart from the quick and full surgery and an apology from the senior staff and consultant there has not been an official response from PALS. I do of course expect one.

We have been trying to make trip plans around it all this afternoon out in the Dales. If she hasn't had confirmed dates by Tuesday lunchtime for all three future appointments she is going to call the consultants PA. The stent will be removed in four weeks time. Ill make sure of that. Scan in three months but I reckon the follow up consultancy a month after could be done remotely over the phone.
