EXPANDABLE HOSE PIPE

I bought an extendable Hozelock discounted at Argos for £15, paid via PayPal. About a week passed and no text update from Argos so I called in and collected
Two weeks later I got text from Argos to say my sale had been cancelled and refunded my £15.

It’s great and if you turn off the tap after use and open the nozzle it snakes about and drains itself apart from about a pint. I then disconnect at the tap with the nozzle still open and keeping it aloft I wind it up and the last of the water drains out.

If it failed I’d definitely buy another, no idea if it’s food grade or not but I regularly drink from the taps and have had no ill effects

You , of course , contacted Argos and sent a refund ?

The flat hoses have an internal polythene tube with an external blue sheath. After extensive use the polythene can split especially near either end where it’s often tightly folded over on itself in storage or folds under its own weight in use, kinks can also cause the same splitting.

This does two things, water leaks into the sheath causing it to bulge and delaminate from the inner. As this gets worse the sheath swells restricting flow to a trickle it can take ages for this to become severe enough to notice or for the hose to totally fail.

I’ve had a couple do this first hint is when they don’t roll up completely flat or appear to wet themselves in storage as the trapped water leaks out.

Worth trimming back each end by a few inches occasionally because that’s where it usually starts.

I bought this hose earlier this year when we bought a smaller Motorhome and we had to go on a drive to save space. Cut it to a size I though would deal with most situations and then join the two pieces on the odd occasion it needs to be longer. I thought rolling it up would be a faff, but it works great and takes up much less room than the standard food grade hose we had previously. Been away about 60 nights so far and continues to work well.

I used to have a flat hose. Hated it. You have to unwind it completely every time, and they don't last long.

Bought a cheap expanding one. Utter crap.

Bought a Hozelock one instead. Brilliant. Had it years and years.

I still have a good quality (grey) hozelock hose on a reel, but that only gets used when the wrinkle hose isn't long enough.

When I was looking for a new hose all the expanding hoses were non food grade and therefore not suitable.
You do know that you're not meant to eat the hose, don't you?

Whether or not it is food grade plastic really doesn't matter. You rinse it out before first use. You don't store water in it.

Ordinary hose is fine. It's bottled water that's the health risk.

Your life, your heath .. your call.

My passport shows my religion as "Coward (orthodox)" so I'll stick to food grade hose, just like the people that built my MoHo used.

I wouldn’t store water in anything less than food grade but the plasticisers don’t instantly leach out of a hose so a quick flush through before use is enough to keep me happy.

Applying "Pascal's wager" to deciding what grade to use proves that it is more rational to use Food Grade

But ......

My rationale is more about practicalities than death bed confessions. I find the storage and weight advantages of a collapsible hose outweigh the very remote risk of plasticisers being picked up by the briefly transiting water.

If I was paranoid about plasticisers harming my health I would not drive a vehicle because they are leaching out of the car plastics all the time, especially when hot, and breathing them is unavoidable. Ever noticed a misting film on the inside of your windscreen? This is caused by plasticisers leaching out of the car plastics and condensing on the screen, where dust and pollen stick to it.

Of the many risks that modern life involves using a non food grade hose for a few minutes is not one that I would apply a philosophical argument about the existence of God to.

Actually despite my rather glib comment, I do agree with you.

As a smoker and drinker the odd bit of plastic material in the system is probably the least of my worries. But in general, I've always thought that the world has become a little bit too clinically clean and our immune systems have become weaker as a result - so, bring it on, gimme the plasticisers and any other muck you want to throw at me in the interest of my well being. :)

As say it is your call.
My call is the opposite but that is the way it is.

I find the techniques used in Pascal's wager a great aid in decision making.
Ironically, as an atheist, I don't use to prove the existence of God.

I concur with the rest of your comment, but not this bit. You get the same thing on the windscreens if very very old cars, where there is no significant leaching. I think it is caused by traffic fumes, tyre dust and chemicals from outside.

However plasticiers are a serious issue. That 'new car smell' is mostly toxins.

This was what I was told by a senior person in the oil/plastics industry. Older plastics like bakelite still deteriorate with age. I don’t doubt that there might be other causes of misting but plasticisers are a common cause.

Bit too late for worrying about plastics, shutting the stable door after the horse has well and truly bolted, as the saying goes.

I’m perfectly happy using ordinary hosepipe for filling up (non-potable) water tanks etc..

I just liked the ease and practicality of the flat hose and blue happens to be my second favourite colour 😜😎😂

At my time of life and state of health, I think the issue of whether to use food or non-food grade hosepipe because of plasticisers leaching out is 100% a non-issue for me. I’m never going to live long enough to find out, innit? 🤷‍♀️🥱🙃
