Why has no one put pi or old phones / tablets these thing to more use. ? 2022/3

I need something that isn't internet based now. But to future proff it this mite work if a tracker can be paired as that the only time the van would have it's own monthly bill

Like tracking and voice. Temperatures for battery heat pads, Chinese diesel heaters.! All can be controlled

Android can do it all . And I like copy and paste. Why can't we use 50%of these old devices as im not greedy,

Problem with old units is they wont take new downloads, i have 3 here and are just used for family pics or secondry stuff to keep incase of a pc hard drive falure, later units can be used to download fdroid which is pure android with out google spyware, with in it you will find some satnaves like osmandroid, comaps orgainic maps etc, not forgetting noutube same as utube but free from spyware and tracking bugs. Realised on this trip I could have used my old Android smartphone in Europe with appropriate PAYG sim as a hotspot for internet access? No mifi malarky?

A raspberry pi can act as a cerbo (but I think you have one anyway) both can have a GPS module attached. You can use an old phone as a hotspot and then get all ot the data logged.

Yes, mifi is a slimmed down phone. Sometimes with a better aerial.

I am terrible at keeping previous phones. The last two we had, a Samsung S22 Ultra and a Google Pixel 7 Pro are both sitting here next to me. My wife's old Pixel 7 Pro is used as a tracker in the van with a PAYG sim card. I can interrogate it through Androids Find my Device and also some third party apps are pretty good, but obviously not as good as a proper tracker. But when a garage had our old Talbot van for new tyres about four years ago, on a break I looked to see where it was. They were using it to go pick up spares from three different places. They did nearly 30 miles! On the app I was using then, something like Commander, it actually updated as it went, so I could see the route! If I had a valuable van in monetary terms, I would spend the £600 or so, but on a 20 year old motorhome, I really don't want to spend a fortune on an alarm/tracker system.

Cheeky sods, I bet the garage wasn't actually picking up spares. I guarantee when asked they'd simply be taking the van on a much needed convoluted test run 😉

Spot on. But I showed them the track and they could see it stopping at motor factors, and how long it was parked. They had to admit defeat and gave me £50 off the bill for two tyres. So instead of £140, I paid £90. (Wish I could get tyres at that price now!)

Fast forward to the present day.
I have a iPhone 5 without sim and a totally knackered battery.
It’s been on my Dash in my crafter since 2022 and I use it solely as a GPS speedo, far more accurate and visible than the one in my instrument cluster!

I use an old iPhone 8 as satnav and dash cam ,needs to be landscape for good wide angle, app free on app store
