I received this email from Marjory Wood, with regards to chemical waste point at Elie.

Good afternoon Bill

My colleague Robbie Blyth passed your email address to me. We have a communication that we'd really like to get out to the motorhome community, and Robbie thought you might be willing to help us with that please?

I'm not sure exactly where you can share this? I can try to post it on some social media pages, although I am not a member of most of them.

Any help you can give us to spread the word is much appreciated thanks. Here is our message:

Dear All

Chemical Waste Disposal Point at Elie Ruby Bay, Fife, KY9 1EA

I'm writing to keep you informed about the chemical waste disposal facility at the public toilets we manage at Elie Ruby Bay, Fife.

Unfortunately, we have had to close this facility for the foreseeable future. I appreciate this is a loss to the motorhome community who enjoy visiting one of Fife's most picturesque locations.

Given the recent spell of great weather, our toilet block and chemical waste disposal point experienced huge demand. The toilet block is served by a septic tank and, due to this location's popularity, the tank does reach capacity. When this happens we put in an urgent request to Fife Council to empty the tank.

Unfortunately, the septic tank and associated pipe work do not have capacity to cope with large numbers of motorhome users wanting to empty their cartridges. Therefore, we have closed the chemical waste disposal point in the meantime. We plan to reopen it at some point in the future.

I'm pleased to say that we have provided a chemical waste disposal point in the new toilet block atGlenrothes Riverside Park where there are four overnight parking bays. To use the waste facility, motorhome users need to purchase a ticket for £3 from the parking machine, and on the ticket is a code for accessing the cubicle. Elsewhere in Fife, there is a chemical waste disposal point at Lochore Meadows Country Park alongside overnight parking facilities.

The Plan Your Trip section of the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust website has lots of information to help you make the most of your stay in the Kingdom. And our Managed Parking page lists the 14 car parks we manage, associated charges and the facilities to be found there.

Kind regards

Would it not be more cost effective to get local campsites to sign up to some sort of scheme where they allow motorhomes for a small fee say £5 to empty their black waste and with most campsites having staff onsite they can monitor the use I know some sites do allow this but if they had some sort of national scheme to encourage other sites to do the same.
Just a thought

Robbie is keen to provide Elsan points where possible Annie. The problem here is it’s on a sceptic tank and so are the toilets. And this carpark is only supposed to have a max 7 vans, but far more than are allowed park up. Also folk were turning up and using the facilities who were not parked. The solution is to connect the toilets and the elsan point to the sewage system. Robbie is looking into this possibility.

Thank you. How nice it is to find a public body acting in support of motorhomers. It is up to us to act responsibly and may I remind those new to the game to act in a good way in order to get respect and support. As a life long camper, caravaner and now motor-homer see some dreadful examples of what not to do. Happy camping!

Sadly amongst us, like all groups we have selfish short sighted individuals. We should always remember that we are merely a microcosm of our sadly selfish society. Fife and Robbie have shown immense patience. But just look across the Firth of Forth and you will see why some places are over subscribed. If only all local councils were more like Fife, these issues would either be resolved or at least not as bad.
