T and satellite problem

We had a new satellite dome fitted last year, a Snipe. There are a couple of issues with it, one is that the dish returns to its home position every time you turn off the TV (our old one used to stay in place so when you turned on the TV again, it was already there with the signal). We also have to take the batteries out of the remote, they will go from new to flat over two weeks of the van not being used.

However, a new issue has arisen, a more annoying one. It now finds the satellite and gets the signal, and we can watch TV - except for BBC (none of the BBC channels) and Channel 5. There's nothing at all on them. It is still under warranty so we took it to the guy who fitted it, and he says we need a new TV. The TV (Avtex) works fine with the aerial, including BBC etc.

Any thoughts?

Sounds as if your Avtex tv, has a built in satellite receiver, judging by what your installer has told you, and it is this that isn't performing correctly.
Avtex have a good reputation, for carrying out repairs, so, it might be best to discuss with their helpline, as your next step.

Sorry to be dense, but should I not be able to get, for example, BBC1 HD?

I have an Avtex TV and a Teleco satellite dish. When using satellite, most BBC channels have disappeared from their normal locations. I understand this to be a side-effect of BBC switching satellite transmissions to HD (a process that is well-advanced but ongoing). Where in the world are you experiencing the issue? I presume UK as you returned to the installer. In the UK, you may need to retune satellite channels on your Avtex and then hunt through your channel list for BBC HD channels. Based on my experience, most (but not all) BBC will have disappeared from the first 100 locations. You can also certainly expect BBC HD transmissions to become unavailable much earlier than SD as you travel south through France for example (and particularly so with a dome, as the size of the dish is smaller).

Which model avtex is it? All the ones I know have HD tuners, but as they aren't true Freesat you need to retune when stations change frequency, even then the old frequency stays in place and you have to shift them, a complete pita

Probably cant help much but on our Camos system which is a dome but really old now on the tuner box there are two options for Astra 28. On one it tunes in every time I switch the receiver off and on again but the second one remembers its tuned in if the van hasnt been moved.

On the subject of the BBC and HD. We use a Maxview free to air receiver. I bet its 14 years old though. Not tried it to see if it still gets BBC. Will have to check.

It's the L217DRS.

We are in the UK. I'll have a look at the instruction manual and see if I can retune it as a first step

Thank you all for your advice.
That will have a HD tuner, so it will receive the updated BBC frequencies, BUT, if it's like ours when you retune the new frequencies will be added at end of channel list, and the BBC channels you have at beginning will remain blank. If this is the case you will have to 'move' the channels if you want them in a logical order, this is a PITA.

I tried retuning and updating the channels, but still no BBC (or a few others). So I called Avtex, they were very helpful and sent me a file that I had to upload to the TV to update it - retuning hadn't been necessary.

Unfortunately I still can only get non-BBC channels, so it may be the issue that the receiver isn't, well, receiving properly.

Have you done as I suggested and looked at end of channel list to see what 'new' channels there are. note they may not be listed as BBC, you will need to view them to see. I need to retune a FTA box, so I'll have a look see what they are naming them.

Sorry, I didn't pick up that they may be listed as something other than BBC. There's quite a few new ones, I will start going through them.

My FTA box seems to have correctly named most of the BBC channels, but I notice, from an earlier retune one of the BBC2 is named EVT4, and one of BBC1 is named EVT5.
