Voltronic Mppt dual regulator

I am a member of the Autosleeper forum and there are a few post over there about the Voltronic Dual MPPT regulator acting in a similar way to a Battery master in that it provides a trickle charge to the starter battery with no solar power but connected to the EHU at night, I do not think that this is possible due to the diodes that are fitted to prevent back feeding, has anybody on here come across this or can confirm if it indeed does happen

I have a Votronic 250 Duo and while it does send a 1 amp trickle to the starter battery it only does so while harvesting solar. No saying someone hasn’t modified wiring in some way though
 
that is my understanding and the biggest problem with that type of device - it is of very little use to maintain the starter battery over the winter months, when it is likely most needed.
 
Mine does no problem, all batts sitting today at 13.4v float, 200w panels.
Dec I had to plug in a few weeks but ok now.

I've had great success using these on a couple of vehicles now;

As with the Votronic, it does assume a decent charge from Solar or other source to the leisure batteries, but then provides a 4A charge to the starter battery

Also means you can use your existing solar charge regulator without having to invest in a new one.
 
I have 400w of Solar and Victron gear installed and a van blitz battery master so have no problems keeping the batteries charged,

My question was has anybody who is using a Voltronic MPPT dual regulator have it act the same as a battery master at night and provide a trickle charge to the Starter battery with EHU connected or with out

Wow! Thanks for that.

Fortunately the ones I used were quite a few years ago, so pre date those 21/22 year date codes, but just shows how careful you need to be, even with 'quality' devices.

I think the answer is no, the Votronic charge controller will only trickle charge the starter battery when solar is active.

I think no because the solar is pumping out around 19v unregulated, the mains charger would be regulated and maybe a pulse charge at times, wildebus is the man to ask.
Think a bench test would be required.
 
The only way you could trickle charge using the Votronic without solar would to be to connect a feed from something else, e.g. mains charger when on hookup. If wired in as per instructions it only sends trickle charge when harvesting solar. It is not, or ever will be a battery master type device

BTW, the way a trickle charger/battery maintainer is supposed to work by default is to provide a trickle/maintenance charge to an auxiliary battery (starter typically) when the main battery is charging and effectively diverting a small part of that charge. And if the main battery is not being charged, there should be no trickle to the starter battery
The older designs of maintainer, such as the vanbitz Battery Master work on a very simple voltage differential and if you fit one of these to a Lithium main battery, it will be probably permanently on regardless of any charging state as the general voltage of a Lithium battery is too high for switch off.
The Battery Master (and most other Trickle Chargers such as the Votronic, Sterling and CBE ones as examples) should not really be fitted to a Lithium setup. There are a couple of Lithium compatible units, and which have been designed with Lithium in mind, and the primary example is the Ablemail AMT-12, which will work with any battery type on the market and also with both Smart and Standard Alternators, plus will have no issues with a voltage sensing B2B.


I am typing the above on the assumption that you have Lithium Batteries as you seem to be saying your Battery Master still works even without EHU or Solar active?

Your forum name ... Lenny24v? you have a 24V system? both Main and Starter?
