Mifi ?

Hi, just wonder has anyone any experience of mifi , been looking at a 3 mobile Mifi pay as you go E5830, not sure if its any good and could do with some advice Please.

When I was in UK I had a 3 stick, in London it worked well but out of there it was hopeless.
Now in France I have a SFR 3G which cost Euro 39 (first 3 days free) and it works brilliantly in the most remote areas.
Hope taht is of some use to you.
 
I have a mifi from 3 that I use.

Good points are;
1) That more than one device can use it, so in my case me the Wife and kids can all connect at the same time.

2) As it is not tethered to you laptop you can move it around to get better reception. I have even put it outside the van in a zip seal bag (just do not forget it)

I have a couple of extra batteries for mine and I keep all three charged so if it is remote I can use it for days.
 
HI thanks Phil wondered what was the cost of extra batteries also could I charge them or mifi unit with my inverter

I got two batteries (copies) for about £15 from ebay. You can also get charge stations
The mifi will charge from any USB device or you can plug it in to the mains / invertor.
 
Many Thanks for that , think I will puchase one + battery, cant do without laptop when away , off to dorset mid may til early june then july in cornwall rounded off with 3 wks in france loire valley in sept avoiding school hols . terry
 
I've been using one for about a year. It is excellent, but the battery life is limited - about 5 hours at best. You can leave it connected to a USB power supply (plugged into a cigarette lighter adapter) and it will last indefinitely, though in my experience it needs to be restarted about once every 24 hours, or it seems to stop working (memory leak?).

I have been amazed by how good the coverage is - I was staying on the beach in NE Scotland last month - where the 3 map says there is no coverage, and was able to get it to work by putting it up in the skylight.

There have been places where there was no signal at all, but they were rare!
 
SFR STick

I am just north of Poitiers (79). Have been to Vendee and Bordeaux where it worked really well (for a stick on a laptop). By the way, instead of plugging straight into a USB port I used the cable connector supplied - it makes all the difference, do not understand why!
The top up cost is Euros 9 for 48 hours and progresses for more hours. Have a look on SFR.fr.
It has sorted my connection problem when on the move.

My mifi

I took the plunge and bought an unlocked Three mobile mifi off Amazon for about £80 thinking I could use any SIM with it. I quickly cancelled the Three (monthly) contract and bought 2x Three pay as you go SIMs off Amazon. 3Gb allowance for 3 months usage was very cheap (but now back up to about £8), still not bad unless you're a heavy user. Went up the west of Scotland and got surprisingly good coverage almost everywhere on the mainland - 3G and HSPD too with good speeds! Not good on Skye or Harris/Lewis however.

Also tried a french Orange SIM (PAYG) in Normandy recently but had no success in getting it going in the mifi (the SIM is free for first 12hrs or so then pay online) Incidentally just picked the SIM up free from an Orange shop over there (Carrefour complex in Rue with helpful english speaking assistant).

So, I too am still actively looking for a cheap french SIM with good rural coverage to try out over there in a few weeks time. So if you have a recommendation please tell me!
