Leisure batteries and curtain!

Hi all, a couple of questions that I hope you can help with. Firstly, we picked up a hymer exsis i 522 a week ago (second hand), the curtains that pull round the windscreen should attach to the metal strip via velcro, this non existent, I tried diy strength stick on velcro and it just pulled off. Can anyone let me know where I might get some strong enough ti hold them closed please. The other thing is that I dont think the leisure batteries are charging as I have gone to use the electric step and it wont work, neither will the lights. On our old MH we didn't have to do anything other than run the vehicle or hook up and that charged the battery. Does anyone know if it is different with the hymer?
Thanks in advance

Rather than repairing the curtain set up, you could use internal silver screens instead.
we viewed a trigano tribute at a show last year and they supplied internal screens, as it didn't come with any cab curtains.
Although it will probably be more expensive it will give better insulation, may be able to find some on ebay.

On the older Hymers like mine they have a leisure battery isolation switch that cuts all habitation power. This cuts lights and the step. I do not know if the Exis has the same set up.

On my Hymer it is a big red plastic key switch near the drivers knee. Just putting it on hookup or running the engine has no effect. You may have something similar or a switch on a control panel.

Check your leisure battery voltage on a meter.

Thank you both, we are going to measure him to see if we can get thermal blinds as they are the way to go, but for our model you can't get them ready made! We will look tomorrow for an isolator switch, its not something we had previously so were a bit stumped! Hopefully it is just an isolator, otherwise it will be a 3 hour trip back to the dealer!

On both of the Hymers that I have owned (A, C Class and a T Class) the step and the entrance lights work when the 12 volt master switch is turned off.
Everything else is isolated when turned off but the step and entrance light work normally.
This is normal for most Hymers.

Hi *****, when the 12volt is off, we are getting nothing, with it on we have some power!

Hi,
Hymers have a Schaudt Elektroblock If you look on the elektroblock and make a note of the model number you can request from Schaudt the manual for that model. They will send it to you via email in PDF format and in english. When making your request just use english as they are excellent at understanding it.
The Elektroblock has a lot of fuses in it. One of them is for the step.
It may be that the fuse needs re-seting.

Hi there, we have a hymer similar to yours and the concertina front blinds hold at the centre of the screen magneticly. You've got to make sure you've got all the blind out of the side casings by gently stroking the blinds near the side casing and feeding all the blind out. If I don't do this the blind wont hold together but does nicely if you do. Hope this helps.
Three weeks ago I ordered external silver screens from "the original silver screens manufacturer" and they came within 4 days and fitted perfectly, I am 100% pleased with these blinds.
Off topic on another thread I read how you thought other mher's no longer wave to you. We have also experienced this since buying the Hymer but we think it may be because of the silver colour and unusual shape of the van that others miss us going past.

Oh, I have been in there, ripped all the tape that was crumbling off of the metal strips and replaced it with heavy duty velcro! Hope it still works! I am waiting for a quote from van comfort for a screen after measuring every part so fingers crossed, if not then I will try the company you suggest, thank you. I think you also have something with the colour and shape of ours being the reason people 'miss' us. I am just sad and like the waving, its a long way from the tent we used to pitch last year!

Silver Screens

I phoned the company and gave the year and model and the guy knew straight away what I was talking about, very knowledgable, no need to measure anything. Came fast and were a perfect fit. No more condensation in the morning. Worth every penny of the £220 they cost.

I had a look at their website this morning and I think I already spoke to that gentleman, but with it being a rh door only he couldn't help. They are shut now for a couple of weeks, but will call again then if I have no luck from my other source, especially as yours were a lot cheaper than I've been quoted and thats if they can do them!

Mines is the same as yours, right hand drivers door and side door. Guy new exactly the model called it a " Brownhills Model". Anyway enjoy your Hymer I know I certainly do. We're of to France and Italy for the month of May.

Could be the same one, although he was very anti Brownills selling the models with RH doors only! Very pleasant though, especially when he realised that we brought ours elsewhere and hadn't even thought about any implications of just having doors on the RHS. Mind you, it's the same as if you were to drive a car on your own, if I broke down in the car, I know that there would be no way that I would clamber over the passenger seat to get out.....but that's another tale!

Hi I had 12 year old pilot basically the same as hymer had a similar problem with liesure battery it turned out thsat I had blown the fuse which feed the liesure battery from alternator. replaced no further problem Terry (Piglets Pilot)

I have a question regarding leisure batteries. I originally had an 85ah battery which when flat would take about 10 hours to recharge on hookup.I have added 2 x 110ah which work great but never seem to recharge fully.

When I plug into my mains the red light indicating the batteries are being charged comes on and stayed on after over 40 hours on mains.

I know the red light used to go out when my old 85 ah was full but it doesn't now.

Have I done something wrong in the wiring.I wired in parallel from the 85ah +/- to same on the new 110 ah and earthed the last battery.

Hi Haaamster,
You don't tell us what your van is but your question is on a thread concerening Hymers so I guess it's a Hymer.

First it is commonly accepted that batteries linked to-gether should be all the same capacity, make and age. If not they all assume the characteristics of the weakest battery.
Secondly if you have linked them all in parallel (ie + to + and - to - for all batteries) there is no need for the last battery to have an earth connection to ground.
It is wise to use wire of good quality and thickness ( about 10mm ) to ensure that there is no resistance.
Finally if your van has a digital control panel near the habitation door it may be that you have to tell it that you have increased the capacity of your leisure battery/ies as it uses that information to work out how much charge to give to your battery/ies.
Hope this helps,
Wanderer

Hi Wanderer,not a Hymer I have a 94 Fiat Ducato.
I read about the batteries should be the same but this 85ah original seems too good not to connect. It stood for 4 months in the winter without being charged when I fisrt bought it and on my 1st weekend away it ran everything. Although I didn't have staelite and tv then.Just seemed a shame not to use it.

I have had the van on charge yesyerday and again today and the charging light is still on.No fancy digital control panl i'm afraid just an indicator with red, amber and green lights.

The light is green but as I said the charging light is still on.

Ok, so it's a self build? Or is it a Fiat base with a van conversion by a proprietory converter? Even so it sounds as if it has a charger, so it must have a name on it. May be worth while doing a search on tinternet for the instruction manual.

It is possible that the batteries are fully charged as shown by the green light and that the red light is just an indication that the charger is on and requires turning off.
