I opened my motorhome driver’s door on Saturday to go out for the weekend and was greeted by a swarm of houseflies which had been residing in the door seal! Probably around 30 and fortunately only a small number actually got into the van. I only came back from a week away in it two weeks ago! Has anyone else had this problem and how can I prevent it happening again? It was not at all pleasant and it certainly freaked the wife out!

House flies, lace wings, lady birds and worst of all silver birch seeds get quite literally everywhere IMHO

probably cluster flies. they breed in confined spaces that are south facing. I have two velux windows that face south which I can never open in the summertime during the day. the two that face north are clear.

We had the same happen to us. We were parked in a forest carpark over night. Woke up in the morning, took dog for a wander, then when I got back to the van I opened the driver door and a swarm of flies filled the air and the van!!
They we all tucked away in the seal.
It was around mid to late October I think.
I put it down to heat from the van. Flies tend to always go to warm places. Maybe it's where they go for over winter.. Seen it on a house once when opening the windows, flies around the outer edges...
I used to think they died off over winter, but the buggers hide in warm spots ready to breed and bug us next fly season..
It's the dam horse fly that I wish would die off and become extinct!!!

Yes they’re Cluster flies also known as attic flies. Tend to go for white vans. Had them on the Crafter just before we sold it. Then they moved to the pick up. There were thousands around all the door seals on the van but the pickups silver so not as bad.

That explains this then! The milking parlour back in the day I was milking cows, the walls were white throughout summer but this time of year they would be black and white due to clusters of flies.. They were quite sedated and on the open walls, the cattle were inside 24/7 so it was toasty warm in the building so I put it down to the heat.
Spiders loved it as Xmas came early for them..

I bought a boat some years ago and when I arrived home took the sails inside and put them in a downstairs room. Few days later when I came home the room window was a seething mass. I opened the door and squirted two cans of fly spray in. Shut the door and waited. Couple of hours later I went In with the vac and cleaned the lot up. What a mess.

Defo cluster flies. We have a problem every year with these and so I wash all the door frames and seals (including the lockers) with disinfectant and then apply an insecticide pen (link below at the end of September. I also apply masking tape over the fridge vents each time we take the van back to storage between the end of September and the beginning of December as those vents were how they got in for the worst infestation I had. If you have access to Motorhomer.com, here's a link to my tale and how I resolved the issue!
