Because lpg is getting harder to find I decided to fit a bigger lpg tank, as the one autosleeper fit only holds 20 litres if your lucky
When looking at the old tank whilst fitted to the motorhome it looked fine as it is only 5 years old, and on a low mileage MH.
But once it was off I noticed a few small scabs, as soon as I scraped them with my finger nail it became apparent just how bad the tank is, I could scrape a lot more off an reveal a lot more rust.
Now I need to know how to dispose of the old tank especially as it is 3/4 full of gas.

Our local council waste transfer station takes cylinders, so perhaps it'd be worth giving your council refuse and recycling department a phonecall?

Have you thought of complaining to who supplied it surely that much rust in 5 yrs shouldn't have happened
It was supplied by gasit to Autosleeper who fit them as standard and as I didn’t buy the motorhome new I think I would be wasting my breath.
And as I was changing to a bigger tank anyway, I am not too bothered but do feel that anyone else with under slung tanks should have a good check
As at first glance it looked fine it was only after I had taken it off and scraped the bubbles did it start to look like this.
But as you say it doesn’t look good for a 5 year old tank.

Gas tanks are a bit like smokeless wood. ;)Take it down the garden and vent it slowly to atmosphere, Pile full beer cans around it for safety and in a couple of hours the tank will be empty and the beer nice and cold. Then leave it out for the scrappy. ;)

If fitting a new tank do have it shotblasted and painted with zink rich epoxy two pack before finishing in a 2 pack polyurethane.
That would have been the best thing to do, but I have already fitted the new tank, I have given it a good sanding and sprayed it with several coats of hammerite stone chip guard.

May as well use marg or butter than hammerite, its house paint with xyleen in it and some polymer to make it look bubbly, sanding a waste of time as the paint is sitting on a shinny surface which may well be blue scale, must be rough to give paint a grip on white steel.

I have a 25ltr underslung….Out of interest were the rusty bits on top or under wrt to the installation?

It is all over if I was to give it another quick scrape I think just about all of it would be rusty. When first looking at it it looked perfect, it was only after I have removed it did I notice a few little bubbles in the paint, I only scraped it with my finger nail, it is all over top and bottom of the tank.
It would be worth wile going under with a scraper ind just lightly scrape it, if it is ok then buy a tin of hammerite under body seal and give it another coat.
