Hello,

I know that many of our members love Maps with me, but that it is not that easy for everyone to get the POI files working on them. I have now added an easier download system for maps with me and other mapping apps that use KML files.

1) Open a web browser on your mobile device and go to the POI Downloads page: https://wildcamping.co.uk/poidownloads.php

2) Scroll down to the "Maps.me Maps with me" section

3) You will see that there are links for all the POI sets: Wild Camp, Pub Stops, Taps, Toilets, France and Iberia.

4) Click on the file that you want (you can do all of them, just one at a time).

5) Click download then "Open In" (the device may just say open in)

6) Choose "copy to Maps.Me" or "Maps.me" from the list or slide the app tiles to the left to select maps.me.

7) The POI locations will now be saved as bookmarks.

8) Go back to your web browser and then go back to step 3.

I don't really have much use for the map on the website (sorry Phil, because I'm sure you put considerable work into it, and it does look very nice) as I much prefer a solution that works offline as I often go places with no internet access. I also don't use device location, only Garmin Glo. I'm therefore happy enough using the MAPS.ME downloads as that suits my MO well.

What I really do like about your responsive website map though is that the pins on it are different colours, and that makes it really easy to see things at a glance. Using the colours even lets me keep an eye open for WC/taps (shades of blue) beside my route, whist heading towards my overnight stop (green). So I don't get confused or need to keep switching POI lists in/out whilst driving.

It would therefore be really helpful to me, and I suspect many others too, if you could please use those same pin colours when generating the KML file for MAPS.ME. The support instructions are here:

Even if you set them all to the same colour it doesn't really matter, as it then becomes trivial to do a global replace of e.g. red to blue in the taps file before importing it. But without that UML line present to edit in the first place it's necessary for everybody who downloads the POIs to write their own script just to insert it, and not everybody has the tech skills or time to do that.

If you could please consider that as an enhancement in future POI file downloads I know that I, and I suspect many others too, would benefit and be very grateful.

I will try and implement this for the next release.

Early days with it, but I'm switching to "Organic Maps" in place of "maps.me".
It appears to be an offshoot of the original team, with a purer, less commercial mindset, AND it allows poi data sets to have their marker colour changed.

Hi, Thanks.
I have installed it and will trial.

Do you know if you can import bookmarks from Maps.me to Organic Maps?

Pat

Thanks for the tip, Bertilak. I was becoming tired of the commercial bloat in maps.me all of which is useless for my purposes. Now installed organic maps and like the clean look. I downloaded the WC .kml files, pointed Organic maps to the folder for import and, surprisingly, all four loaded in one go labelled Bookmarks1, Bookmarks2 etc. These can be renamed if required.
It seems that Organic maps is being developed as FOSS (Free open source software) which should mean that it will stay ad free.

Great to have the new colour-coded pins (though it may take me a bit of time to adjust to the green pins tending to merge into the green shading on the maps). Thanks Phil.

Hi there - I just started a thread in the POI forum about the new pin colours and then found this thread. - I think the new colours are really great - apart from the green WC ones which aren't as immediately obvious to me.

Oilburner - can you perhaps tell me how i can change the pin colours myself - as I'm struggling a bit with the WC one now being green as they arent so obvious amongst all the green woodland on the maps.me base map. PS I don't write script! Is the one you you have written easy to use - I'm reasonably good with IT?

I shall also look at organic maps as an alternative - Thanks! :)

All the best!
Melissa

OK - so I downloaded Organic maps - can someone give me instructions as to how to change *all* the colours of a particular dataset as its not obvious to me - i seem to be able to change the colour of individual one (but I could do that with maps.me too)

Thanks!

I've checked with OM and there is no way to change the particular dataset within the OM App, but you can export the bookmark set and modify if it (if you are geeky) and then import it back. There are some instructions about modifying the KML set, but not easy for novices I'm afraid...

I am pretty geeky - are there instructions anywhere? :)

Thanks,
