I have the common combined system , but have drained all water due to the weather
I want to do a few jobs inside to get ready for the winter , went to put on the gas heating and suddenly thought ..is it safe to do so with no water ?
anyone have a definitive answer to this?

seems I can answer my own question !
in the first section of my [ french] handbook [ equipement integre ] it says ...if water is in the reservoir that will also heat when the air heating is on...wasn't absolutely convinced by that

but in another section it specifically says that it is safe to put on the heating when the water system is empty

voila!

I am sure I read in the manual that you can use the heating on our Truma without any water in the boiler. You could always give them a call on 01283 586050 to be sure

It is safe,

I have drained mine and left the heating set to minimum to keep the van aired.

I would say it is safe. I have a dial with a switch, one for water and boiler at the top and another with just boiler. I can either switch it to either one. My manual says it is okay. It is a Truma.

I had the same worry, it isn't just you. Like the others have said already, the Truma book says you can use the unit if the water jacket is empty.

What worried me was the use of words.
It is possible

Good to know we have a member who actually uses the Truma boiler empty, thanks to everyone for my huge sigh of relief.

I've been using an electric-convector with a frost setting, this keeps the inside of the van at around 10 degrees with our current temperatures of around -3 at night to +3 during the day. The Truma boiler hot-air raises the temperature to 17 on my van at the lowest setting.

Any comparisons ?

truma

hi i rang truma the other day for the same question and they told me it is o.k to run with out water in the boiler just for heating. happy camping

Brilliant and thanks for letting us all know, I still can't figure why my Truma boiler smells like something burning on the 60-degree hot-water setting. I think there has been a thread running somewhere but I can't find it.

Thanks *****, I'm hooked-up most of the time and still undecided about the use of electricty to heat the van via a convector with a frost-stat or using the Truma unit.

I'm convinced that having to use electricity to burn either oil, or in this case gas, can't be as efficient as running a single-fuel appliance.

For example, in my home I have oil-fired heating which heats the place up quickly but just the burner uses around 250 watts. I also have a Morso multi-fuel fire that runs on wood or coal-products so I prefer to keep that running, it just needs mending around three times in 24 hours using coal-products.

Back to the van, when I checked it this morning with an outside temperature of 3 degrees the inside of the van was 9 degrees. I think the lowest I can get the inside using hot-air is 15-to-17 at zero outside.

We have just bought a Kontiki 99, think it runs the same system, I have used the heating over the weekend and it worked perfect, dropped the water and tried to start the heating back up and the red light comes on?????? Help???? Changed gas and filled the tank back up and it still not working???? Thanks.
