Move to ban wilding in Devon

the trouble is so many m,homers want to have a bbq put out table and chairs etc .
its that that really gets locals annoyed.
unfortunately so many with m,homes think they are on a campsite every time they stop.
be discreet and its ok.
lift up roofs etc slide outs etc all give a bad feeling. to locals
nothing outside park sensibly you are ok.
dont put curtains or anything round the cab windows .
look like your just parking.

I must be missing something, because I can count on one hand how many times I have seen this from Motorhomes. Anytime I have seen barbecuing being done was by car drivers, who incidentally carried their table and chairs with them. I have witnessed car drivers barbecuing on plastic tables damaging them at kings barns in Fife. I have witnessed serious anti social behaviour including drunkenness, having things thrown at our van, urinating in plain view, rubbish left, loud music being played, dog mess left, I could go on. None of this from us. Yet time and time again Allan we are Banned, whilst others are left alone. It seems strange that these same locals don’t seem to annoyed with this type of behaviour also. Just stating what I have witnessed Alan.

certainly see it happening alot in the south west uk
spain portugal etc have it all year round with m,homers behaving badly.

You have got me there Alan never Motorhomed in Europe, but is putting out furniture and barbecuing not acceptable there?. Also I looked at the video earlier, and I agree they have a problem there, which requires to be managed. But to talk about an England wide ban on wild camping because of one place just about sums these people to a tee.
What they should be doing is restricting the amount of vans, and limiting stays for one or two nights. As for campsites there are not enough, they are expensive down there, and you have to book weeks in advance, and most are opened only half the year.

The thing is, I don't want to park I want to camp! No harm in putting out a couple of chairs and lighting a BBQ, that's what wildcamping is all about, as long as you are not obstructing anybody else.

Certain things need to be done discretely - such as disposing of grey waste, but surely you should be enjoying yourself?

I wouldn't have a BBQ or set up chairs in a public car park, but a patch of land down a side road in the middle of nowhere - definitely!

Me to Rob, but never in the place referred to. As you say it’s fine in rural locations so long as it does not limit space for others. We tend to leave space in front of the van were possible and then sit out there. We have never barbecued, but I have witnessed plenty of day trippers doing so, and they normally don’t bother to clear up after they are finished. Whilst at Loch Tay last summer we watched folk in tents lighting camp fires etc. But I can honestly say I have rarely seen poor behaviour up here. But possibly the problem in England is simple lack of space.

Yes A lot of places accept parking but not Camping Behaviour like Sitting outside Side windows open, Step out, Silver Screens on we've been moved on several times in Portugal for not complying with these conditions and not all at once I feel that if they decide to move you on its any excuse

We are talking about a parish council asking the government to ban wildcamping. It's a bit like wildcampers asking the government to open up every car park in the country. It has the same chance of success.

Hence the

Depends which country it is. My general experience is Western Europe, mainly France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany etc. In France motorhomes are generally admired and respected and they do what the hell they like. There are supposed to be rules on Aires about not putting out tables etc or so people say but thats not my experience and Ive been on hundreds of them. Wilding is easier but some of the rural aires are just like official wilding spots really so not as much need to search out wild camping spots. Italy not quite as easy and their aires IMO (Sostas) are not as good as France. Germany they are everywhere and people sit out but wilding is not as easy. The only place I have been where they were stricter on putting out tables etc was Northern Spain but Ive not been there much.

Surprised you have not been. You are into scenery and mountains etc, you would love the Alps and they Pyrenees.

Thanks Barry. Barry I would love to head over the Chanel. But my wife is a very nervous passenger, and I don’t think she would enjoy it. I am considering doing one of the guided tours in France in future, I know they’re expensive, but it would give me the opportunity to get used to driving on the right, and gaining experience of things on the continent.

Fisherman, don't worry about driving over in France, it is so easy as there is so much room in their Country.
Mostly it would be much quieter than a Sunday drive over here and most seem to know how to filter and don't expect you to move over one lane. Most keep to speed limits
Once you have done it, you will be kicking yourself for worrying
Just catch a Caen/ Cherbourg or Dieppe ferry and nice countryside is on your doorstep
edit
and no need to book anything!

***** I am not to worried it’s my wife. She even gets on edge over here when driving the van. I would love to drive through the continent, but I could lead to divorce :)

I think those guided tours are well worth considering.
I did a one to Libya in 2007 and still do the odd trip with people I meet on that holiday. Well I say still, but meant over a year ago.

Maybe she would find it more relaxing as a passenger over there.
Just a thought
You mentioned going on an organised tour.
That could be more stressful trying to keep up with others .
During my trucking days, it was always harder if traveling in convoy because of traffic lights and junctions

I do plenty of convoy trips and I never stress about people keeping up. 🤣

I know how she feels I hate the left hand seat when being driven on the right hand side feels like every thing coming towards you is about to hit you. Do guided tours actually drive in convoy or just meet at specified stops?

You are regular visitors to Arran I seem to remember. Their roads are rubbish and the String road and Ross road can be a bit hairy. If you have survived them you have nothing to fear in most of Western Europe. Rural traffic in much of France is probably similar if not less to Arran. Mountain roads in the Alps and Pyrenees are excellent. You wont encounter much steeper than the "String" just longer. Its an absolute doddle over there until you return to England and hit the M20, M25 and M1 carnage.

I have to agree with Barryd , I’ve never felt safer than driving in France it all seems so effortless with quieter roads.
