Safe removal of Satellite dish - leaking slightly so want it out.

Hi,

As a newbie to the site please ignore my lack of knowledge with motorhomes. We have a 1992 Pilote 5 berth motorhome, we don't watch TV so I want to take out the satellite dish, I am practical and can see how to remove it but is there something I can specifically buy to fill the hole once removed?

We are currently living in a house sit in the Loire Valley so I am taking my time doing up the motorhome and removing un-necessary weight. We noticed that it has sprung a slight leak in the last two days which has run down the extension pipe of the satellite dish. Another reason we want it out straight away.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks

Nathan

As a temporary fix you could buy a piece of 'motorhome rubber roof'. We brought some off of the well known auction site to fix a hole and touch wood it has worked. Hope this helps, Lel

What sort of dish is it?

I'd be inclined to stick a patch of some suitable material over the hole using sikaflex. Ideally the material should be the same as whatever the roof is made of, aluminium sheet or GRP probably.

Two thoughts. Firstly remove the dish and cover hole with original material as per Andy above. Don't use cheap silicone, use sikaflex - it is a false economy to cut corners here.

Secondly I would think the leak would be easily fixed stripping out any sealant there and replacing with sikaflex. Hide the wiring in the ceiling and it would still be there as a selling point when you sell the motorhome. These roof mounted dishes are not cheap!

hi badgerfamily. we had the same many years ago bought a fibreglass kit with resin you mix just rubdown with sand paper to make good grip with the roof put plenty of sikaflex or the equivalent in intermarche or similar when dried sand smooth and spray with can of white car paint we did and never leaked and was a permanent fix. all the best

Google for a company that markets your satellite system, or is a specialist company in that field. They will probabbly have something purpose made to plug the hole.

Many owners swop over their (expensive) sat systems when they change vans. I do know that there are blanking plates for TV aerials.

"Sikaflex" is being used as a generic fix-all without specifying which particular product.

If something has to be stuck forever then there are a couple of their adhesives that are perfect - but if you need to fix a leak past a gasket and the bit of equipment is going to stay and there is the chance that it will have to be removed for repair, then Sikaflex adhesive/sealant is possibly one of the worst things to use. In those sort of situations a non-setting mastic may be a better choice.

Thanks for the advice

All,

I appreciate the advice I will speak to the manufacturers first then and if they don't have a plug then I will get some of the sikaflex and do it myself.

Some good advice from you all, thank you.

Regards

Nathan

My advice is to fix the leak, a good satellite system adds value to the van and makes it more desirable to a potential puchaser should you ever wish to sell.

I'd use Carafax Caraseal IDL99 non drying mastic sealant rather than sikaflex.

If you want to use sikaflex, use sikaflex 512 which is for caravans, but that's more like glue and difficult to clean up for remaking the joint once it has set.
