Finally got around to wiring up the fog lights on the motorhome today. Spoke to Phil at Kelso and he suggested using a piggy back fuse holder. Also stated they should only be able to be switched on when the dipped lights are illuminated so plugged the holder into the dipped light fuse. Cheers for the recommendation using the piggy back thingy was a much simpler solution than hard wiring.👍

Wonder if I can make a claim against Mercedes. :D

Factory fitted fog lights work with just side/position lights on, although the cornering function only works with dipped beam.
And any excuse for a pic. :p

The whole point of fog lights is that they light down low without splashing up a lot of light that would reflect back off the fog. If they only work with dipped headlights on, they're no good for that!

Very flaky internet here. Double-posted by mistake.

True but many work with parking/side lights, the law states you must show a white light to front, thats all so if dip blows you are still legal with a side lamp and or fogs,i know this because a chap i know was taken to court and got of on a technical regarding this, ps my van works fogs on side lamps

I reckon most manufacturers disagree....

Most of the vehicles I've driven with fogs on have only operated them when dipped beam is in use

Yes, but the beam pattern often confirms that they're not fog lights anyway. The ones on my car are really cornering lights. The ones in the motorhome have never had bulbs in since I have had it.

How did you manage to get an mot for your motorhome if there are no bulbs in the foglights....for a mot it states if lights are fitted they must work!

I think in all the vehicles I've driven with factory fitted front fog lights, the front fog lights work with either position or dipped beam, but rear fog light only comes on with dipped beam.

People driving around with side lights and front fogs on is a pet hate of mine, see it all the time

And no, they aren't DRL. You can tell because when you turn sidelights on, DRL goes off.

Exactly, see it all the time. I think it was very fashionable at one stage.

I agree.

Easy. I drive to the test station. They test it. They issue an MOT.
It has passed at four different test stations since I've had it. None have quibbled about front fog lights.
I don't know if they are part of the test at all: after all lots of vehicles don't have them, so they can't be mandatory.

Hmm, I took a pickup with a rear truckman cover which had a high level LED brake light which I dad disconnected the wires when I had to remove the cover to carry a brewing vessel. I had replaced the canopy but had not connected the wires back up the brake lights on the truck worked ok. The examiner ( who I knew ) said if the light is fitted it must work, so as he was checking over other things I re-connected the wires.

Being mandatory is relevant. A rear wiper isn't mandatory but if fitted it is included in the test. I had a car with a rear wiper with a split blade. The tester told me I had two choices 1) Fit a new blade; 2) Take the old blade off and throw it away!

Driving with fog lights on when visibility is good is a pet hate of mine too and is illegal...

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

When I was in the police force, people driving with (usually front) fog lights on (classed as a moving traffic offence) were always worth a stop check, this often led me to a search of the vehicle and breath test. I made many arrests from these stop checks.

I think it depends on age of vehicle if front fog lights are tested. Fairly recent though, certainly within last few years.
