After 20 years I’ve just bit the bullet and changed bank accounts to a nationwide flex plus accounts, this will give me free breakdown cover for the camper van up to 8m, well I’m good there as I’m 7m, free worldwide travel insurance for me and the family, and free mobile phone insurance for me and the family. Yes I have to pay 13£ per month but combined we are paying 21£ per month as a family on phone insurance so it’s a win win. With the Campervan insurance policy being up for renewal next month at least I’ll save money by not selecting the breakdown cover option.
Might not suit everyone but thought I’d share as I was really impressed by all the benefits

For £13 a month looks like a really good deal to me.
I will take a look at this, thanks.

Check the time/holiday limit I have similar with lloyds/AXA but only covers 1 month away.
You might also check
repatriation of vehicle
associated hotel & travel costs
Medical costs
I got 31 days per trip with an option to extend if longer

It used to be cheaper, and give a good rate of interest on the savings account. Still good, but nothing like as good as it was!

This is what worries me. Once you're paying fees, they can increase them. I don't know if it's more difficult to add fees to a free account?

OP, can you keep your existing account open for this reason?

on the last point, while the banks encourage you to use their "switching service" to move DDs, SOs, etc from your existing bank to the new account there is no requirement.
I opened the Nationwide account a few months ago, purely for the features it offers but don't use it for anything else and have literally done nothing with it other than deposit some money to cover the monthly costs. Eventually when I get round to it, I'll probably sort out a monthly transfer from normal account to Flex Account just to cover the fee and keep the minimum balance in it.

I have been using this account for five years now for the very same reasons. It is good value IMO too. (y)

If you're on any medication though, be sure to check that the travel insurance still covers you.
We've had the Flex account for about a year and it works out cheaper than the individual policies we used to have. I had to declare some medical stuff for the health cover but the cost increase was still much cheaper than our old LV travel policy ..........

people will need to check for themselves, but when I got the info for the account I do recall Coronavirus related exclusions noted on the travel cover, so recommend looking into that before relying on the cover for holidays just in case.

So, with ADAC biting the dust for us Brits I think this will be a good way to get the Behemoth covered for breakdown.

Our monthly charge for the current account we have just now is only £5 so I'm thinking of taking on the Nationwide option without transferring all the account SO's DD's etc, just to see how it works out. No big objection to shifting banks as such but still like to proceed cautiously. Is it acceptable to put some cash into the Nationwide account and not have the whole shooting match transferred or does it require monthly minimum deposits?

I know this information is probably available online from Nationwide but I'm essentially a lazy sod.

Cheers

i had the free travel insurance with my premier account noted the 31 days & asked if that could be changed they upped it to 90 days no extra so we’ll happy 4 years later as i reached 70 i asked if i could keep it on thhey then told me it had only been extended for the first year id happily ran around europe not covered ,

I am with nationwide and the cover can be extended to over thirty days as well as paying extra for over 70. Even with the add ins it is still a good deal and if you phone them you get sensible answers and decisions. Last year I queried Covid cover when we went to France and it was explained that we were covered due to dates of booking etc. I also did the live chat using the same questions and printed the chat out to carry with me. As we have a joint account we are both covered on the same policy. I only hope that it continues considering the very low commitment required for maintaining the account.
