Waving indiscriminately can be very dangerous. In Australia there is a long entrenched rivalry between motorhomers and caravanners - for good reason of course. Probably even worse in the UK.
When we set off into the sunset in our monster 40' tag-axle bus with Suzuki 4wd trundling obediently behind , we were in pretty good spirits and Betty especially waved at just about anything on or off the road, INCLUDING that unfortunate underclass towing caravans..
Several months later, about half way around Australia (bloody long way BTW) I noticed two police cars tagging along behind, lights flashing but no sirens so I kept driving.
Then in the distance (dead straight, dead flat road so could see for miles) we noticed a heap of flashing red and blue lights spread right across the road and extending into the bush either side.
Obviously no choice but to stop and sit there patiently wondering what all the fuss was about.
SWAT team approached and screamed at us to get out of the bus, which we did. Told to lie down on the ground and bare our necks ready for a knee. No this is Australia, not the USA so no SWAT team either, and of course just the one police car, and he was very nice too.
Seems that we had been waving at caravanners and whizzzzzbaaaangs rather than sticking to our own type, and they were so shocked at being actually recognised by their social superiors that they had seizures and heart attacks and crashed all over the place behind us - - - so would we please not wave at anything smaller than ourselves because it was doing terrible things to the road toll statistics.
So that is why we never wave.
