About WildAx

WildAx is a British van conversion manufacturer that has earned a reputation for building clever, well-designed campervans with a focus on practical layouts and quality construction. Based in West Yorkshire and backed by the Rapido Group, WildAx offers a surprisingly diverse range of models across multiple base vehicle platforms.

The current range includes models on Citroën, Fiat, Ford, Mercedes, MAN and Renault chassis — offering more base vehicle choice than most competitors:

The Aurora — a clever 3-berth layout with front seating/living area and rear sleeping area, split by the kitchen and washroom. The Aurora Leisure variant adds further flexibility.

The Constellation — a spacious 2-berth with a large, comfortable lounge area that makes it ideal for couples who want generous living space. The Constellation 4 adds a fourth travel seat.

The Solaris XL (Fiat-based) — award-winning family design with long bunk beds (up to 6ft 8") in the rear and a full double in the front, accommodating a family of four.

The Elara (Mercedes-based), Europa (Renault-based), Triton and Proteus (Ford-based) — additional layout options offering different combinations of space, price and base vehicle.

The Altair (MAN TGE-based) — featuring an all-electric habitation area, representing WildAx's commitment to innovation and sustainable camping.

Ownership history

WildAx was founded in 2006 by just two people with a passion for building quality van conversions. The company grew steadily through its early years, weathering the 2008 recession and establishing itself as one of the UK's leading campervan and van conversion manufacturers.

Based in West Yorkshire (currently at Elland), WildAx grew from a small workshop to a significant operation employing over 70 staff and producing around 300 campervans per year.

In 2017, WildAx joined the Rapido Group, one of the world's largest motorhome manufacturing groups (which also owns Rapido, Westfalia and several other brands). This partnership provided access to Rapido's engineering resources, purchasing power and European distribution network while allowing WildAx to maintain its distinctive British character and manufacturing base.

The company has continued to grow under Rapido ownership, expanding from five dealers to nine dealers across 10 UK locations. In 2023, WildAx announced plans to build a large modern new factory to support continued expansion.

All WildAx motorhomes carry European Whole Vehicle Type Approval and are fully approved by the National Caravan Council (NCC), having passed the detailed inspection and approval process that provides buyers with confidence in build quality and safety standards.

What WildAx is known for

Multi-platform flexibility — WildAx is unusual in offering conversions on six different base vehicle platforms (Citroën, Fiat, Ford, Mercedes, MAN and Renault). This gives buyers genuine choice of driving experience, dealer network and vehicle characteristics.

Clever, practical layouts — WildAx designs prioritise real-world usability. The Aurora's split living/sleeping arrangement and the Solaris XL's family-length bunks demonstrate a focus on how people actually use campervans, rather than just showroom appeal.

British built with NCC approval — all WildAx conversions are manufactured in West Yorkshire and carry full NCC approval and European Whole Vehicle Type Approval. This provides peace of mind that every vehicle meets rigorous construction and safety standards.

Rapido Group backing — since 2017, WildAx has benefited from the resources and expertise of one of Europe's largest motorhome groups. This brings better component sourcing, engineering support and the reassurance of corporate stability behind a growing brand.

Growing dealer network — nine dealers across 10 UK locations provide reasonable coverage for sales and servicing, with the network continuing to expand as the brand grows.

Why people choose WildAx

If you want a British-built van conversion — WildAx offers genuine UK manufacturing with all the advantages of local production: right-hand drive optimised designs, UK-specification systems and accessible dealer support.

If base vehicle choice matters — the range across six different platforms means you can choose the base vehicle that suits your preferences rather than being locked into a single manufacturer's chassis.

If you're a family needing bunk beds — the Solaris XL's family layout with 6ft 8" bunk beds is one of the best family van conversion solutions available, offering genuine sleeping comfort for growing children.

If you want all-electric camping — the Altair on MAN TGE demonstrates WildAx's forward-thinking approach, with a fully electric habitation area that eliminates gas entirely.

If you want a growing, innovative brand — WildAx's trajectory from two people in 2006 to a Rapido-backed, 70-person operation producing 300 vehicles per year shows a brand on the rise, with the investment and ambition to continue improving.

What to watch out for

Relatively young brand — founded in 2006, WildAx doesn't have the decades of heritage that brands like Auto-Sleepers or Westfalia offer. Some buyers prefer the reassurance of longer-established manufacturers.

Limited used market history — with production volumes of around 300 per year and a relatively short history, the used market for WildAx is smaller than for mainstream brands. This can make finding specific models and configurations more difficult.

Van conversion space limitations — as panel van conversions, all WildAx models have the inherent space constraints of the van body. For buyers who need more interior space, a coachbuilt motorhome from another manufacturer may be more suitable.

Dealer network still growing — while nine dealers is reasonable, it's still smaller than major brands. Depending on your location, the nearest dealer may involve a significant journey.

Brand awareness — WildAx is less well-known than mainstream brands, which can affect resale confidence for buyers unfamiliar with the brand. However, awareness is growing rapidly within the van conversion community.

What to check when buying a used WildAx

Check the NCC approval documentation — verify that the vehicle carries its NCC approval certification and that no unauthorised modifications have been made that might invalidate the approval.

Inspect the conversion quality — WildAx has a good reputation, but check all furniture joints, panel fixings and electrical connections. Look for any signs of movement or looseness in the conversion fittings.

Check the base vehicle appropriate to platform — the inspection priorities vary by base vehicle. On Fiat, check cam belt; on Ford, check injectors; on Mercedes, check service history at Mercedes dealers. Each platform has its own specific concerns.

Test the electrical system — particularly on all-electric Altair models, test every electrical system under load. Check solar panel output, battery capacity and the charging system from both mains and alternator.

Verify the habitation service history — annual servicing should be documented. WildAx's NCC approval means the vehicle was built to specific standards — ensure ongoing maintenance maintains those standards.

Check for damp around conversion fittings — wherever holes have been cut in the van body for windows, vents or roof fittings, check for water ingress with a damp meter.

Pre-purchase checklist
  • Verify NCC approval certification documentation
  • Check no unauthorised modifications to conversion
  • Inspect all furniture joints and panel fixings

Warranty advice

WildAx provides a manufacturer warranty on new vehicles, backed by the Rapido Group. The NCC approval provides additional reassurance of build quality standards. When buying used, verify the warranty status and ensure all servicing has been maintained.

An independent warranty backed by the RAC is recommended for used WildAx purchases, providing coverage independent of the manufacturer warranty and protecting against both conversion and base vehicle issues.

OakTree Motorhomes offer up to three years of RAC-backed warranty, providing comprehensive peace of mind on a quality British-built campervan.

Dealer warranty

When buying a used WildAx, look for a dealer that offers an independent warranty backed by a provider like the RAC. This means your warranty remains valid even if the dealer ceases trading. OakTree Motorhomes offer up to three years of RAC-backed warranty, covering the average ownership period.
