About Frankia

Frankia is a premium German motorhome manufacturer with over 65 years of heritage, specialising in high-quality coachbuilt and integrated motorhomes built on Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Fiat Ducato platforms. Part of the Groupe Pilote family, Frankia maintains complete manufacturing independence in its Franconian factory.

The current range spans eight model series with 28 floor plans:

The NEO — compact, lightweight models under 3.5 tonnes, ideal for buyers who want Frankia quality on a standard driving licence.

The NOW — a deliberately modern departure from tradition, with innovative design, lighting and smart features aimed at a new generation of premium motorhomers.

The F-Line — versatile semi-integrated and fully integrated Fiat-based models combining comfort with practical functionality.

The TITAN — luxurious fully integrated models with generous space and premium comfort for long-term touring.

The PLATIN — Frankia's flagship Mercedes-Benz Sprinter models, equipped with self-sufficiency technology as standard: lithium batteries, solar panels, ALDE heating with underfloor heating, residential air conditioning and advanced multimedia systems.

With 650 units per year from a single German factory, every Frankia receives individual attention that mass-production brands simply cannot match.

Ownership history

Frankia was founded in 1960 by Gustav Groß in Marktschorgast, Franconia, northern Bavaria. Originally named Feriela-Caravan, the company started with five employees producing caravans under the motto "At home on the road." The name was changed to Frankia Fahrzeugbau GmbH in 1983.

In 1973, Frankia developed its first motorhomes on Mercedes-Benz chassis — a technological partnership that has endured for over 50 years and remains central to the brand's identity. By the late 1970s, the company had grown to 60 employees as camping became mainstream in Germany.

In the early 1990s, Frankia made the strategic decision to cease caravan production entirely and focus exclusively on motorhomes. In 1990, the Groupe Pilote from France acquired Frankia as sole shareholder, integrating the German premium brand into the same group that includes Pilote and Le Voyageur.

In 1995, Frankia pioneered double-floor technology — one of the first manufacturers to develop this now-standard premium feature. The company celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020 and launched the new Yucon brand, extending its portfolio from compact campervans to integrated premium liners.

Today, Frankia manufactures approximately 650 motorhomes per year in its Marktschorgast factory — deliberately modest production volumes that prioritise quality over quantity. All models carry the "Made in Germany" designation.

What Frankia is known for

50+ year Mercedes-Benz partnership — Frankia's relationship with Mercedes-Benz stretches back to 1973, making it one of the longest-standing partnerships in the motorhome industry. The Mercedes-based Platin and Titan models benefit from decades of chassis-specific engineering refinement.

Pioneering double-floor technology — Frankia was one of the first manufacturers to develop double-floor construction in 1995, a feature that provides superior insulation, flat interior floors and protected service routing. This innovation is now considered essential in premium motorhomes.

Self-sufficiency as standard — the Platin range includes lithium batteries, solar panels, powerful inverters and advanced electrical management as standard equipment. Where competitors charge thousands in options for self-sufficient capability, Frankia builds it in from the factory.

Made in Germany quality — every Frankia is built in the original Marktschorgast factory with approximately 650 units per year. This modest production volume ensures individual quality attention and the genuine craftsmanship that defines premium German manufacturing.

Premium without excess — Frankia occupies an interesting position — genuinely premium but without the extreme pricing of Concorde or Niesmann+Bischoff. The quality-to-price ratio is compelling for buyers who want premium German engineering without six-figure pricing on every model.

Why people choose Frankia

If you want a premium Mercedes-based motorhome — Frankia's half-century partnership with Mercedes-Benz means the Platin and Titan models are optimised for the Sprinter platform in ways that newer converters cannot match.

If self-sufficiency matters — the Platin's standard lithium/solar/inverter package means you can wild camp with full electrical comfort without any additional investment. For buyers who value independence from hook-ups, this is a significant advantage.

If you want premium quality at less than ultra-premium prices — Frankia offers Niesmann+Bischoff levels of German craftsmanship at prices that, while not cheap, represent genuine value in the premium segment.

If you want Groupe Pilote backing with German manufacturing — the French group ownership provides financial stability and European distribution, while manufacturing remains entirely in Germany to German quality standards.

If you tour extensively in winter — the double-floor construction, ALDE heating with underfloor heating and premium insulation make Frankia motorhomes genuinely comfortable four-season vehicles.

What to watch out for

Limited UK dealer representation — Frankia has specialist UK dealers but the network is small. Servicing, warranty work and parts may require travel to specialist importers.

Premium pricing — while more accessible than ultra-premium brands, Frankia models start from around €80,000 and the flagship Platin exceeds €200,000. These are significant investments.

Predominantly left-hand drive — many Frankia models are only available in LHD. The right-hand drive range for the UK market is more limited than what's available on the continent.

Parts supply can be slow — sourcing specific Frankia components in the UK can take time, given the small UK dealer network and German manufacturing base.

Large, heavy vehicles at the premium end — the Platin and Titan models are substantial motorhomes requiring C1 or C driving licences. They demand confident driving and limit access to smaller roads and campsites.

Modest production means limited used choice — with only 650 units per year globally, the used market for Frankia is small. Finding the right model in the right specification requires patience.

What to check when buying a used Frankia

Verify UK specification — confirm RHD, UK gas system and electrical compatibility. Many used Frankia models are continental imports requiring careful specification verification.

Check the double floor — inspect access panels and look inside the floor void for moisture, damage or loose connections. The double floor is excellent when intact but needs inspection on older models.

On Mercedes models, check the Sprinter base vehicle — verify full Mercedes dealer service history, check for injector issues, inspect turbocharger condition and test the rear-wheel-drive components.

On Fiat models, standard Ducato checks — cam belt history, clutch operation, gearbox condition.

Test the self-sufficiency systems — on Platin models, test lithium batteries under load, check solar panel output, verify inverter operation and test the ALDE heating system including underfloor circuits.

Verify habitation service history — complete service records are essential for premium vehicles and significantly affect value.

Pre-purchase checklist
  • Verify vehicle is UK right-hand drive specification
  • Check gas system and electrics are UK compatible
  • Inspect double floor via access panels
  • Check floor void for moisture or damage
  • On Mercedes check full dealer service history
  • On Mercedes check injectors and turbo condition
  • On Fiat verify cam belt replacement history
  • Test ALDE heating including underfloor circuits
  • Test lithium battery bank under load
  • Check solar panel output
  • Test inverter operation
  • Test residential air conditioning if fitted
  • Test multimedia and satellite systems
  • Check all 12V and 240V circuits
  • Conduct comprehensive damp check
  • Check all window and door seals
  • Inspect exterior panels for damage
  • Verify complete habitation service history
  • Check current MOT and advisory history
  • Test drive for mechanical condition
Warranty advice

Frankia provides a comprehensive manufacturer warranty on new vehicles, backed by Groupe Pilote. When buying used, verify warranty status and transferability, and ensure all required servicing has been maintained.

An independent warranty backed by the RAC is recommended for used Frankia purchases, given the limited UK dealer network and the premium cost of specialist repairs on both the conversion and base vehicle.

OakTree Motorhomes offer up to three years of RAC-backed warranty, providing essential protection on a premium German motorhome where individual repair bills can be substantial.

Dealer warranty

When buying a used Frankia, look for a dealer that offers an independent warranty backed by a provider like the RAC. This means your warranty remains valid even if the dealer ceases trading. OakTree Motorhomes offer up to three years of RAC-backed warranty, covering the average ownership period.
