About Bailey

Bailey of Bristol is one of the UK's most established leisure vehicle manufacturers, with over 75 years of heritage stretching back to a single caravan built in a Bristol garage in 1948. Now one of Britain's biggest producers of caravans and motorhomes, Bailey remains family-owned and independent — a rare distinction in an industry increasingly dominated by large European groups.

The company's defining innovation is Alu-Tech construction, introduced in 2010 and widely regarded as one of the most significant developments in leisure vehicle production technology in over three decades. Alu-Tech uses an interlocking aluminium framework with GRP (glass-fibre reinforced plastic) linings, eliminating traditional timber framing in the walls and roof. This cuts external joints and fixing points by 90%, dramatically reducing the potential for water ingress while producing a lighter, stronger, better-insulated structure. All Alu-Tech vehicles achieve Grade III thermal insulation classification for genuine all-year-round use.

Bailey's motorhome range includes the flagship Autograph (featuring Alde heating, AL-KO chassis and Peugeot cab), the luxury Adamo, the accessible Alora range, and the Endeavour campervans. All coachbuilt models use the Alu-Tech bodyshell on an AL-KO AMC chassis, combining Bailey's construction innovation with one of the most proven chassis platforms in the industry.

Bailey is regularly described as offering the best value for money in the UK motorhome market — providing features like Alde heating, quality kitchens, solar panels and generous standard equipment at prices below similarly-specified competitors.

Ownership history

Bailey was founded in 1948 when Martin Bailey built a caravan in his garage in South Bristol and sold it at Ashton Gate market for £200. A year later, F G Bailey Ltd was formed and went into production. The company grew rapidly through the 1950s, outgrowing its original site and moving to South Liberty Lane, Bristol in 1960.

In 1977, the company was purchased by Patrick and Stephen Howard, and has remained in Howard family ownership ever since — making Bailey one of the very few major UK leisure vehicle manufacturers to remain family-owned and independent.

Bailey entered the motorhome market in 2011 with the launch of the Approach SE, relatively late compared to rivals like Swift and Auto-Trail. However, the company brought its award-winning Alu-Tech construction technology (introduced in 2010) straight into the motorhome range, giving it an immediate competitive advantage.

Today Bailey employs over 500 people across three sites in Bristol, manufacturing approximately 6,000 touring caravans and coach-built motorhomes per year with an annual turnover exceeding £130 million. The company celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023. Over 75,000 vehicles have been built using Alu-Tech construction.

What Bailey is known for

Alu-Tech construction — Bailey's fully patented, timber-free bodyshell technology uses interlocking aluminium frames and GRP linings to create a structure that is lighter, stronger and dramatically more resistant to water ingress than conventional construction. Developed in partnership with the University of Bath and tested at Millbrook Proving Ground, over 75,000 vehicles have been built using this technology.

Outstanding value for money — consistently praised by reviewers and owners as offering more specification per pound than any competitor. Features like Alde heating, solar panels, quality kitchens and spacious layouts come as standard at prices that undercut similar-specification rivals.

Family-owned independence — one of the very few major UK motorhome manufacturers still in private family ownership (the Howard family since 1977). This independence allows Bailey to focus on long-term quality and customer relationships rather than short-term corporate targets.

Grade III winter insulation — all Bailey motorhomes achieve the highest thermal insulation classification, confirmed by cold chamber testing. Combined with Alde wet central heating on Autograph models, Bailey motorhomes are genuine four-season touring vehicles.

Off-grid capability — all Bailey motorhomes come equipped with solar panels, water tanks and gas bottle provision as standard, allowing self-sufficient touring without hook-up from day one.

Why people choose Bailey

If value for money is your top priority — no other UK manufacturer consistently offers as much standard equipment and specification for the money. Bailey buyers regularly note that equivalent specification from Swift, Auto-Trail or Auto-Sleepers would cost significantly more.

If you want modern construction technology — Alu-Tech is one of the most thoroughly engineered and extensively tested construction systems in the industry. The elimination of timber from walls and roof means the two biggest enemies of motorhomes — damp and rot — are largely neutralised.

If you prefer buying from a family-owned company — in an industry increasingly dominated by large European corporations, Bailey's family ownership and Bristol roots give it a personal touch that many owners value.

If you want off-grid capability from the start — solar panels, water tanks and gas provision come as standard, so you can wild camp or use aires without modification from day one.

If you tour in all seasons — Grade III insulation, Alde heating (on Autograph), and robust construction make Bailey motorhomes genuine year-round touring vehicles, well-suited to Scottish winters and Scandinavian trips.

What to watch out for

Relatively new to motorhomes — Bailey only entered the motorhome market in 2011, much later than rivals like Swift (1985) or Auto-Trail (1982). While the company brought 60+ years of caravan expertise, some buyers prefer brands with a longer motorhome track record.

Quality control snagging on new vehicles — like most mass-produced motorhomes, new Baileys can require snagging in the first year. Owner forums report issues including loose fittings, trim pieces not properly secured, and minor electrical niggles. Many owners accept this as normal for the price point.

The floor remains wooden and vulnerable — while Alu-Tech eliminates timber from the walls and roof, the floor is still wooden construction. This is the one area where damp can develop, particularly around edges and in corners where condensation can accumulate.

Aluminium repair can be expensive — if the bodyshell is damaged in an accident or impact, Alu-Tech panels can be more expensive to repair than traditional construction. The lightweight aluminium is also more susceptible to dents.

Interior materials are functional rather than luxurious — the exceptional value proposition means Bailey makes savings on interior trim and soft furnishing quality. Buyers expecting the hand-crafted feel of Auto-Sleepers or the premium finish of Hymer may be disappointed.

Roof strap leaks on some early models — a known issue on certain model years where the roof strap bedding wasn't adequately sealed. Bailey addressed this in later production, but it's worth checking on used vehicles from around 2018-2019.

What to check when buying a used Bailey

Focus damp checks on the wooden floor — the Alu-Tech walls and roof contain no timber and typically read 0% moisture, so the floor is where to concentrate your damp meter. Check around all edges, under furniture, near the entrance step and in corners where condensation can accumulate.

Inspect the roof strap and all external joints — check the cover strap over the roof-to-wall joint carefully. On some model years this was a known weak point for water ingress. Look for any signs of sealant deterioration, cracking or lifting.

Check the AL-KO chassis — Bailey coachbuilts use the AL-KO AMC chassis. Check for any corrosion, particularly around mounting points, and verify that the chassis has been maintained according to schedule.

Test the Alde heating system thoroughly — on Autograph and Adamo models, run the Alde system to full temperature and check every radiator for even heat. Look for coolant leaks, check the expansion tank level and verify the system pressurises correctly.

Verify the Peugeot base vehicle condition — check cam belt history, test the clutch, and ensure all gears engage smoothly. Verify the brake condition and check for any oil leaks.

Test all habitation systems — run every appliance, test every tap, check the solar panel is charging correctly, verify the leisure battery condition and test all 12V/240V circuits.

Check for outstanding snagging — if buying a vehicle that's only a few years old, ask about any warranty work carried out. Early-life snagging that hasn't been addressed can become more serious over time.

Warranty advice

Bailey's Alu-Tech construction carries a 6-year body integrity warranty from new. When buying used, check whether this is still active and whether all required maintenance conditions have been met.

For used purchases, look for a dealer offering an independent warranty backed by a provider like the RAC. Bailey's family-owned structure means strong customer relationships, but specialist motorhome repairs — particularly to the Alde heating system or Alu-Tech bodyshell — can be expensive without warranty cover.

OakTree Motorhomes offer up to three years of RAC-backed warranty on their used stock, which is particularly valuable on Bailey motorhomes where the combination of Alu-Tech construction and Alde heating means specialist repair bills can be significant.

Dealer warranty

When buying a used Bailey, look for a dealer that offers an independent warranty backed by a provider like the RAC. This means your warranty remains valid even if the dealer ceases trading. OakTree Motorhomes offer up to three years of RAC-backed warranty, covering the average ownership period.
