About Auto Campers

Auto Campers is a premium UK Ford Transit Custom specialist with heritage dating to 1970, combining Roy Wood's engineering legacy with the Firth family's award-winning furniture craftsmanship. Three UK locations provide national coverage.

The range includes:

The Day Van — award-winning modular campervan from £62,000. M1-certified 6-rail bonded floor, 2-7 travel seats, 2-4 berths. Maximum versatility with configurable interior.

The Leisure Van — from £70,000 with swivel cab seats, twin sliding doors, inside/outside kitchen. Optimised for comfort and flexibility.

The MRV (Multi-Recreational Vehicle) — from £69,000, bridging Day Van and Leisure Van with removable bed slats for maximum adaptability.

The Classic — affordable option with traditional floor plan design.

All models feature the trademark twin sliding doors opening to an integrated indoor/outdoor kitchen with sink, hob and drawer-style fridge/freezer.

Ownership history

Auto Campers traces its heritage to Roy Wood Transits, established in 1970 with a reputation for innovation in van conversions. Roy Wood himself designed and built specialised conversions starting in the 1960s-70s, including space-framed race vehicles and high-top caravanettes.

The modern company operates across three locations: Auto Campers South in Winnersh, Berkshire (sales), Auto Campers North in Thurlstone, Sheffield (production), and Highland Auto Campers in Inverness (hire and sales).

Auto Campers North was established by Carl and Mark Firth, formerly of Wellhouse Leisure, who are skilled furniture makers and won Campervan of the Year in 2011 and 2014. Their partnership with the Roy Wood heritage creates a unique combination of engineering and craftsmanship.

The Day Van won Campervan of the Year 2015, confirming the brand's design innovation credentials.

Why people choose Auto Campers

If you want a versatile everyday campervan — the modular Day Van works as a daily driver, work vehicle and weekend campervan.

If indoor/outdoor living appeals — the trademark twin sliding doors with integrated kitchen create a unique lifestyle.

If you want Ford Transit Custom quality — the Transit Custom platform offers car-like driving dynamics with strong dealer support.

If you want to try before you buy — Highland Auto Campers offers hire-before-purchase options.

What to watch out for

Premium pricing — from £62,000 for the Day Van to £70,000+ for the Leisure Van represents significant investment.

No permanent washroom — the Day Van relies on an optional Porta-Potti rather than a built-in toilet.

Options accumulate quickly — the extensive options list can significantly inflate the final price.

Ford Transit Custom limitations — the mid-size base vehicle constrains interior space compared to larger panel vans.
