We have just put the camper to bed for the winter (BOO!) and it doesn't half seem a long time until March! Normally we would use the beast a couple of times over the winter but circumstances are going to prohibit that this year, worse luck! Does everyone put their camper up on jacks to help the tyres or leave as is?

Sorry can't help you there,Never put the camper to bed!!!Because it's also my everyday vehicle I don't think it's ever stopped in one place for more than 6 days.Normally 2 is the most

In theory it would be a good idea, from the point of view of preserving your tyres and better security. However, I would think the best of all would be to lay it up habitation-wise, but start it up and run it up and down the drive (or run it round the block if you can) say once a week. That would keep all the mechanical bits happy and automatically rotate the tyres.

Anything mechanical doesn't like being left unused. Things start to seize. The clutch plates can stick, the handbrake can stick, disc can get pitted due to rust forming, wheels could get deformed due to weight being in one place. The engine oil can get moisture in as well as the piston barrels going dry from lack off circulating oil....etc etc etc.
My advise would be to have a drive in it every week. Not just start it up but have a drive around.

Its not always possible to have a drive round because some of us only tax our vans for 6 months mine runs out end of november and wont be taxed untill april /may next year, and its not worth the risk driving it without tax on the roads.

Cas, even if you just drive it back and fore a few yards it will help prevent things seizing up.

overwintering laying up

I have laid mine up over the past three winters and found that just starting it up and moving it backwards and forwards a few times on a weekly basis kept everything ok. Dont foreget the van side. I leave all the cupboards open, the fridge door propped open and have several de-humidifier crystal containers about the van to keep the moisture down, its amazing the water they collect. If you can get a hook up now and again it will help to keep the batteries topped up. Dont foreget to wrap it up in its silver screens and pull down the blinds to help keep the chill out.

Steve4Kay ... You'd have a very hard job finding the sausages at Aldi as I stated they were at Lidl! ;¬)... The locations are listed under the Shropshire section of the forum

Lost sausages...

I have to admit that the last twice I have been to Lidl I have not been able to locate them! Have a horrible feeling they have discontinued them :¬(

what a strange idea. stopping using your van in the winter. is that what they used to do in the olden days?!

the camp sites are fuller than ever now, especially at xmas and new year, try getting in sheepcote valley (brighton) or nene park (peterborough) or crystal palace (london)

best we camp wild!

Christmas in the van

last year we had one of our best Christmas's ever!.

I was fed up with always doing the "family" dinner and not being able to get a reasonable package holiday abroad we opted to go to Southport. I know, not one of the most prettiest of places to go to, but we didn't want to chance being too far from home if the weather decided to be really bad.
We arrived at the caravan club site to find it was nearly full !! Every van had an outside display of fairy lights, singing snowmen, reindeer etc etc. It put Blackpool lights to shame. It was so pretty and festive and everyone was so friendly, as we all are in this game;) . Walking along the prom on Christmas day, watching the sunset , getting back to the van for some festive cheer was just magical and no stress from the family!. We would do it again in a heartbeat and the best bit, joining those sleeping bags together to snuggle down for a good nights kip!

That is just one of many memories of camping in winter.:)

I fail to see why it is such a "strange idea" as it is nigh on impossible to drive a vehicle when you are in a full body cast and recovering from major spinal surgery!

Sausages

Hi Steve4Kay
I have bought those saugages from Lidl, they should have them in stock. Also they do sell them at Aldi at my end of the world. The Aldi ones taste a lot better than the Lidl ones. They are sold i a sealed pack of either 5 or 6. They are nice and spicy.Good hunting.

Thanks for the sentiment! I Have not yet had the op, that comes on 20th Nov, but getting everything prepared before then is proving a pain in the proverbial

The camper has to be put to bed early this year as my wife will not drive it, she will tow the race car, use an A frame etc etc but not drive the camper, due to its length, lack of power steering and general lack of rearward vision

As for toilet needs, I had a L5S1 disc replacement in Aug '97 and was also in a full body cast back than and had to use a catheter for frontal needs while there were strategically placed holes in the cast to cope with other jobs!

The worst knot I've ever got myself in was, when aged 16 I tripped over and broke both arms and had to have both in casts, I couldn't feed myself, cater with my toilet needs myself, anything.... As I was living at home, at the time, I had to endure my mother attending to my bodily needs.. Embarrasing or what for a 16 yr old!

Whoops

The lack of rearward vision is meant about the camper not the wife!

Woohoo!

Yeehaa... Found that Lidl have the pork and Stilton sossies in again! Mmmmmm

shresbury is having a lidle built and will be open in december....i will hot foot it to the sausage counter to stock up for our trip to scotland on dec 26 calling at moffat, edinburgh, dores (loch ness) and chanonry point (black isle) to watch the dolphins..... for shresbury read shrewsbury !!!! muppet mode again !!!! best of luck to virgil...the hole at the back of the cast sounds intimidating somewhat like a turkish toilet !!!!!
