just been looking at york,has any one been to the viking center or the dungeons.Are they worth a visit.

Hi Gary,
When we visited a couple of years ago, I thought the Viking Centre smelly and not very interesting, in other words a rip off. But everyone to their own. I thought the old Castle Museum was a better way of spending an hour.
York is a great place to visit, enjoy.

I agree that the Castle museum is an excellent place
to visit.
A while since we were there but I am sure there will be updated Exhibitions.
I did not do the Viking experience as I had reservations about its Quality
but each to their own.

Just visiting York it's self is good, but parking the van in the centre is abit tight.

Hi;

We thought the Yorvik centre only 'ok', its also a right pain getting in as there always seems to be a hooge gurt queue.

I can thoroughly recommend the Castle museum, we spent hours in there and also the national railway museum, even if thats not normally your bag its still very interesting and 'free'.

i like to go to the museum as i have stuff that ive found in there,also the midldleham ring ive had hold of as i was there when it was found.

Thank you all for the helpful information.Might consider the railway museum i no it is good, just that after coming out of work, would like to get away from ,trains and coaches.

Hi Gary,we have stayed at the Rowntree site really good if you can get in. Parking is easier at one of the park and Rides in York.We use the one at Monks Cross as there is a Caravan Club Site close to there but it does not open until March.No charge for Parking no time limit,but no overnight parking.If you look at the Park and Ride website there is a Long Stay Park for Motorhomes in York where you can stay overnight.Hope this helps,we are going to York this weekend but staying at a cc site

I hold no brief for Jorvik but it's a bit unfair to accuse it of being smelly when they tell you (or did when we went some years back) that they aim to recreate the smells of viking times! How they know what it would have smelled like is another matter...

I've been to both the Dungeons and Jorvik - but I wouldn't bother again with either. I felt they were very commercialised and what I refer to as 'turnstile tourism'.

If you're looking for a more interesting venue, I think the consensus is a visit to the Railway Museum (free) and the Castle Museum and forget the above!

I visited Yorvik more than 20 years ago and still have the smell in my nostrils . Stinking good
I only wonder how they do to keep it stinking year after year

Hi Tony Afraid you cannot stay overnight in the Railway Museum carpark it is so busy you would be lucky to get your Motorhome in.As i mentioned earlier better to Park and Ride there is one bus that stops at the Railway Museum, but when we parked at Monks Cross it was only 5 to 10 mins walk.If you can try the Rowntree Caravan Club Site ( You don,t need to be a member for this site ) and it is within walking distance of York and all the Museums.

If your going to go to Rountree Park Gary i would just turn up on spec as its one of the sites tuggers book at the start of the season and then dont turn up as you dont have to pay a deposit.I have been a few times and although the web site shows its fully booked when you get there there are plenty of empty spaces.http://www.willowhouseyork.co.uk/ is a good site about a mile from clifton moor shopping centre where you can park and get a bus into town the downside is it was a no kids site so unless your leaving the kids at home you wont be able to use it .There are other sites on Wiggington rd though so worth a look.Also thought museum was worth the money.

It's probably bought in powder-form from a company specialising in 'odours of yesteryear'. I know what you mean - it's a pungent smell you don't forget and I can still smell it myself!!

I was aware of this, but the smell lingered on for days. What must these guys have been eating?

Further to the above, The Caravan Club site Rowntree Park is only a 10 minute walk from the Railway Museum and less than that from the middle of town and is right by the river.
A super location, but not wilding

We stopped here 3 weeks ago a great site for york centre..and plenty of great pubs...

Cost's £14 for caravan club members...but £21 for non member..thats all in.
