Happy New Year All....... wonder if any advise for a break in the wye Valley Area have to attend a meeting month end on a friday in Birmingham and as they paying the fuel thought would get van out of sleep mode and give it a run with hubby and when meeting over instead of coming straight back to devon thought would spend Saturday somewhere nice also need stop for Friday after meeting dont mind heading back south way dont mind not being on sites either so some advice gratefully accepted can google areas if off roading dontwant to travel to far of main routes though still no spare cash after expensive christmas thanks in anticipation.

There are lots of places in the Wye Valley.

I know of quiet spots in Ross-on-Wye where vans often park, a meet spot at Tintern on the riverbank beside the abbey, lots of parking in the Forest of Dean and there's official parking in Hay-on-Wye car park if you're heading further north, eg to the Elan Valley which is always worth a detour.

I live in the Wye Valley so just send a PM closer to the time of your visit if you'd like specific spots.

What size van do you have?

wye reply hee hee

Sorry obviously i in need of a break what with son returning home to live daughter leaving for essex and granddaughter being here half the week and she is only one and half anyway thanks for your advise always we do scotland and when traveling up this area looks so lovely off to the left of the m5 our motorhome is left hand drive and for ferry crossings ......... five meters (just over with tow bar really) my meeting is in Solihull and due to finish at four pm so would like to be somewhere by say seven ish thanks again in case weather turns really cold do you know any reasonable open sites?

Which dates are you visiting? Most site licences here run April - September so campsites tend to be closed.

There are several CLs in the area if you are you a member of the C&CC or CC, including one in a very attractive setting on the riverbank at Hole-in-the-Wall a few miles outside Ross-on-Wye.

If you're coming here out of season and unable to use sites/CLs then I know of some places you can wildcamp discreetly without fear of being moved on!

This month

As usual the agency i work for thinks best time for the whole country to meet is jan bet it is bad weather anyway will be at meeting on fri 27th this month so looking for fri night and sat night with easy access back to m5 south on sun.

Hmmm.... sites are still closed here and the Hole-in-the-Wall CL is CC (and normally cut off by floods at this time of year). I'll have to do some research into this one to find the best location.

In the meantime, there's Greenacres CL at Lea (a quiet village about 6 miles from Ross along the A40), tel: 01989 750217

Doward Park Doward Park Campsite might be open. This is relatively remote on a hilltop close to Symonds Yat but is easily accessed in a 5m van. There are quarry walks and prehistoric caves nearby.

There's a site at Symonds Yat but I've never inspected it. It's owned by fairground showman Henry Danter and, I think, run by his daughter. I'm not sure I'd recommend it but if you're stuck, it could be worth checking out: Wye Valley Camping and Caravan & Camping site on the river.

Or, if you prefer to wild, please send a PM and I'll share a few quiet locations with you.

P.M

Hate computers only just given in to having a lap top weird really as all my work is computer linked but i am useless at them so can you send me instructions on how to send you a pm ps had to ask son what pm stood for huh!

Private messages are only available to full members ... sorry :(

I've heard some dodgy stories about symonds Yat

Symonds Yat is a good and popular area but I personally wouldn't choose to camp on Danter's sites in the main season although I say this without having ever visited and inspected them, either officially or as a client. Those by the canoe hire centre also become crowded and noisy in the summer. Out of the main season they're quiet. The one on the Doward is very quiet and respectable!

Re parking on a Friday night, you might simply prefer to wild in Ross-on-Wye. Easy spots I can publish are Greytree Road opposite the entrance to the coach park, Wye Street or the broad entrance to the car park in Wilton Road (before the height barrier). Alternatively you could wild in the Forest of Dean - eg car park opposite Cannop Ponds or the car park at Tidenham (towards Chepstow). Neither have any barriers.

Wye thank you

If you out and about that weekend look out for us probably as you said Forrest of Dean sounds nice we in left hand drive bennimar knock for coffee .....

I'm probably going to be in Norfolk or Cheshire then but, if not, I'll definitely keep a lookout for you.

Likewise, keep a lookout for a Romahome with a red-head driver!
