011.JPG015.JPG011.JPG015.JPG sorry about picture quality,my scanner not working.if you know minis you'll recognise a mini moke, which is the smallest camper i ever built, for my daughter and her husband to drive to ghana, with their dog perkins.i made a perkins head shaped hole in the bulkhead for him to look through when driving.as you can make out i hope, the back overhang kept bottoming on the saharan sand dunes so they welded an axle off an old peugeot.she was arrested in benin for having a joint and had a punch up with 5 african coppers who tried to search her in the cells, and beat them off!aaaaahhh,my little girl, all growed up!

Some years ago on a camp site in Spain we met a couple with a similar trike, they were pulling a trailer tent behind and were on route for Cape town in South Africa, don't know if they got there but they were very determined.

there are rules a trike can pull a 1.5mtr wide traler. a bike can only pull 1metre wide trailer . 245 kg gvw is the heaviest for a trike or half its gvw .
m,bikes can tow 150kg or upto 2thirds of the bikes gvw which ever is least . google watsonian squire ltd for bike trailers .
we used to build trikes as part of our vw garage . built several for disabled iders . i was the county rep for the NABD for awhile. gave it up in about 96 as work got too much. stil a few around kernow trikes was the trike part of our volkssupply business. all packed in in 98 ,to tour africa . the pod was built about 30 yrs ago . its a devon pskette.

Reminds me of family holidays in the 50's early 60's.

My Dad had a Watsonian Double Adult Sidecar powered by a BSA B33 500 single cylinder, geared down.

It would take us three boys upto the age of about 13, Mum & Dad, A rough collie, 3x4 homemade trailer and all camping gear for a fortnight.

To get to my Grandmothers in Derbyshire was exactly 97 miles from Liverpool and it would take about 4 -5 Hrs with a couple of stops. I think it was flat out at about 50. (Over the Cat & Fiddle, nowadays it's about 1 3/4 Hrs)

We went every where in that.

Height of luxury was a transistor radio that plugged in an external car aerial.

We used this mode of transport summer/winter. Me in the front seat with my youngest brother between my legs, the dog in the nose keeping my legs warm and slobbering all down them as she hated travel and my middle brother in the back sat on top of sleeping bags.

Love to know what the H&S crowd would think nowadays!!

Mum & Dad used to smoke whilst going along as they had pudding bowl helmets n WW2 Spitfire goggles. Waterproofs/riding suit were old WW2 tank suits.

Luckily there wasn't much traffic then!!
