Wood stoves

Hi, can anyone help me please?
I want to put a woodstove in, and have a vitreous enamel chimney pipe. What is the best way to ensure that where the pipe passes through the lined ceiling it will not start a fire? Also, please, which is the best way to seal the roof to stop rain getting in around the chimney?
Thank you.

if it were a gas flue 25mm seperation from combustible surface is the rule with adjoining surfaces fireproofed,

there is a high temp mastics, available to seal around the flue at roof level

channa

Thank you channa.
Sorry to ask another question but....if I cut out a squarish hole in the ceiling, then put the chimney through the middle of it, could I use this new fireboard material, cut to fit around the chimney, to tidy up the square hole? Or.. can you suggest something else please?

i've done a lot of these.find a woodburner seller or get onto windysmithy and buy the following, silcone sealing gasket for exterior and metal trim for inside. the gasket is a piece of heatproof silicone sheet[same as silicone cake cases etc] with a nice bendy aluminium frame which will fit any roof shape, the silicone is marked with circles for different size flue pipe and you cut out your size which is a tight waterproof fit when stretched over the pipe.then you put butyl rubber non setting mastic around the hole 50 or 60mm bigger all round than the flue and screw or poprivet it. the inner trim is a square of ally with a hole cut to the size of the flue and then cut in half to be fitted after the roof gasket is fixed. the only other thing you'll maybe need to do is fix metal plate[thin allyis fine] to walls or cupboard side if too close to stove.fix these plates with large nuts as spacers to create an air gap between metal and wood . for a discreet cowl i cut a circle of ally and bend it over my leg and poprivet it to the top of the flue to keep out rain
the gaskets are about £20

Have you got a twin wall flue? This will reduce risk to adjacent panelling as well as ease the roof problem.

sorry no pics, and just looked at windysmithy site, gaskets now 35 quid, well worth it. i usually mount the stove on a bit of stone flag from places like band q,glue that to the floor with gripfill and fix stove feet to it.i don't recommend any of the following but i have had stoves fixed 50mm from surrounding furniture and walls and the deflector plates have worked,i always use single skin flue as you get more heat out of it and i liked to get it cherry red on a cold evening.good for drying clothes too.often drove with it alight, bit sparky of course you need to close the hatch, kept one alight all the way from the algarve one winter when bus heaters packed up.one of those things you got to use a bit of common sense with, like gas,or it could kill you

type in "flue flashing" on eBay, ideal way of sealing the flue for about £20
